New tires sold as new should not be any older than 5 years old. After 5 years they are supposed to be disposed of.

Sounds reasonable to me. But "salesmen" have been putting it into peoples heads that a "fresh" tire should never be more than one year old. I've heard tire salesmen say this. Pure marketing horsepucky. Another one that makes me laugh is child seats for cars. They now have a date label on them so the manufacturers can encourage you to buy one that is "safe". My local charity store won't take one in that is older than a year.
