My furnace has been acting a bit quirky recently but kept the house warm so I left it alone. The low last night was about 7 below zero (that minus 22 to you using the froggy measurements) and this morning the dogs woke us up by jumping into the bed. While my cheapskate wife keeps it cool in the house during the winter when I crawled out I found that it was 47 degrees in the house. My 18 year old furnace is no longer supported, and the required parts are no longer available, so a new one is being installed right now. While that is certainly no fun it is good to have friends in the HVAC business. I had to park the bike outside so they could get through the garage to swap them out. I hope the Blue Streak doesn't hold a grudge.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Well, one good thing. It seems like furnaces have actually come down in price, if you figure in the cost of living. Twenty five years ago, I put a new furnace in a small house and it cost me $1,400 dollars. Last year, two years ago, some friends of mine put a new furnace in their small house and it cost, $14 hundred dollars. Plus, the new furnace you're getting is going to be waaaay more efficient. I suppose I'm just trying to look at the bright side.

I dunno....the first winter (2009) I moved into my place the furnace bit the dust (it had been installed in 1964) the replacement woulda run me around $2700 installed if I didn't have (which I did) a home warranty. My out of pocket was $465.
Guess you get what you pay for in the long run...in 2011 my AC went out [also installed in 1964](bad condenser fan) & the repair/service contractor quoted me $4700 to replace the entire AC system & a furnace (he recommended a slightly higher BTU rating than was installed 2 yrs before.) Anyhoo, I got a replacement fan & starter capacitor, did the work myself to repair the AC...my out of pocket $140.

In 4 weeks I have my wood stove installed. I'm surrounded by forest and I'm a carpenter. I'll be warm.

I build with it and burn what's left over. Then again, if there's something left over I build with it. I'll figure it out.

In 4 weeks, winter might be over! Shouldn't you get a wood stove in October instead?

Record number of days the 7.5km canal skating rink has been open here in Ottawa however probably the fewest people skating on it. Glad I missed 3 1/2 weeks of it yet I hear riders on the west coast are out in numbers do to the warm weather.
