sad news today Sold down the river all that tradition. Sooner we have total control of ourselves the better.... My son gets his new cap badge on Thursday, he'll no longer be a Royal Scot Cadet. Will be interesting to see what happens to the recruitment of soldiers now? I'm betting there will be a big downturn in numbers and hence the quality of recruit being selected.

Not a good day for any soldier in Scotland, why could they just not leave it as it was. Will they wear their new cap badge with as much pride as they did before?

As you say Grip, all that tradition gone .. I still think anyone joining up will still be proud to wear the Scottish badge though. I know it's not the same and never will be. I don't see what it will gain though. No doubt some twat in a suit in an office will be behind it ...

I wonder what "The Bruce" would say to this. I must say, though, your berets are much better fitting than ours in the U.S. Army. Several years back, a former Chief of Staff of the army decided that our traditional headgear was too non-descript, so he edicted that we would all wear a black beret for both field and dress uniforms. Trouble was, that the elite U.S. Army Rangers had long claimed the black beret as their own symbol of achieving status of "Ranger." Ranger training is not for the faint hearted or semi committed, and the award of the black beret was considered the epitome of the warfighter - being only awarded upon earning the honor, and only to male warriors (females not being eligible for ranger courses to date). NOW, we ALL wear the thing, and the Rangers? The Rangers now wear a tan beret. The obvious question to me has always been, why not just have the "regular" soldiers wear tan and let the Rangers keep the black? To me, it was as though someone had decreed that we all should get to wear the Branze Star Medal for the "sake" of morale. (This isn't too far from the truth from my own observation, but that's another story. ) Now I realize that the Scotland regimants have a much longer tradition of arms than do the Rangers, but the fact is that "someone" on top always ends up eventually screwing with history at the stroke of a pen and with no regard whatsoever for the soldiers who proudly represent the traditions and the brotherhood of their units in arms, and the country they defend. Thumbs down for the bastid who did this sacralige!! The wanker probably never even served!

From what I can find out he died in WW1 and was a sargent, so between 1914 and 1918 I would guess. I wish I knew what regiment he was part of.

Definately a sad day - that's a lot of fine tradition and some strong military history that's being washed away with the stroke of a pen.
I'll have a dram in salute this evening.

It's always sad to see a brotherhood destroyed for the sake of a buck. Especially ones that have histories that go back centuries. If the Brits can do this, is the end of the Royal Family far behind?
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

I spoke with my bro this morning, and he just got back from a business trip to Scotland. He had visited the Royal Fussilier's Museum and had heard about this nonsense from a VERY pissed off guy who worked at the museum gift shop. This is NOT going over well with the former troops of the regiment.

JB they are all up in arms about it, both past and present soldiers.
The almalgamation of a few regiments was very hard for a lot of soldiers to take but this has just gone too far. Lots of brave spin being put on things, will be very interesting to see how it affects voting in the next elections.

If you are inferring from this that it must have been an Englishman, it may interest you to know that the "pommy" in charge of the armed forces is a Scot!! Scotsman

I didn't want to add that as well, seeing that they are doing such a fine job!
I guess GB has been infected by the Hollywood idea that all baddies must be English!
