So my bike sits for a few weeks, a thick golden puddle underneath the engine, coming from the shift rod seal going into the sidecover....Question is, can I replace the seal without removing the side cover? Pinion boss cracked and sealed with JB Weld...Don't really want to see all that! Afraid of what I might find! Dead cylinder fixxed by removing and meticulously cleaning carbs...Amazing how this bike breaks just by sitting a few weeks....

You may want to dig through the threads here in the general tech section but I do seem to recall a thread on this some time ago, and I believe that someone said that you can replace the seal without removing the side cover. I would definitely double check that though.

Just ran into this particular issue myself. I was due for an oil change so I went ahead and drained the oil. I then used a hook from a pick and hook set to pull out the old seal. I then slid the new one on and tapped it into place with a wooden dow rod around the edges. 100 miles this past weekend and no leak. So yes, you can replace it with out removing the clutch cover.
