To start with, my '05 America has about 60K miles. The last two times it was taken for a spin, it started firing on one cylinder within 10 miles. Fast forward 5 1/2 weeks later, the bike hasn't misfired once for the mechanic. Money is a little tight and I don't want to randomly buy parts hoping that it fixes the problem. Given the miles and age of the bike, what would you folks do?

I would reroute my coil wires, so the left powers the right and vice versa. If it happen again, and the misfiring cylinder moves over, time for new coils.

For sure, try to isolate the problem with Ryk's suggestions. It's probably one or the other... a bad coil or the CDI. I'm going with a bad coil (only because it sounds much like a problem I had a while back which in the end turned out to be a faulty coil).
Live to love, love to live.

Thing is, it's been at the shop for 5 weeks and it hasn't misfired. He says that it has to start acting up before he can figure out whats wrong.

Get your bike back from the shop before the storage bill gets too high. Ask your mechanic to switch coils, then let you ride it enough to do the test. 5 weeks? Summers winding down.

Mine was missing out of the blue and finaly nothing at all out one cylinder I switched the coils and still nothing on the one side. I would say switch the coils and see if the problem moves then go from there.

I went and bought a new cdi as mine started running on one cyl.for the first time.Funny the other will run on one routinely and after a short time fire on both.I changed the batt. in the one I bought the new cdi for and like majic both cylinders fired On both cdi's.Make sure your batt. is good and strong. As for the other speedmaster,I have learned to live with it for the short time it only fires on one.

Definitely follow Ryk's advice first as that is an easy way to diagnose a bad coil. The one thing about bad coils that I have found is that they have a tendency not to show up until they get good and hot so you may have to ride the bike around for a bit for it to show up. From my own experience with a bad cdi and others that I have read about, the main sympton is loss of one cylnder and it is always the same cylander even if you swap the plugs and coils around.
