I used to line up Tonka trucks and jump them on my bicycle.

That was pretty cool, Greg. I don't know where he got the nerve to do his jumps but he did, ever after getting busted up time and time again. I was enthralled by him when I was a teen.

Live to love, love to live.

Cool video! I don't remember the Triumph years, just the Harley years even though I was 16 at the time of that jump. He was one of a kind.

Always thought Caesars Palace was the most famous jump he made even though, or maybe because, he crashed so badly. I remember the Triumph days more, maybe why I started riding them.

Isn't it funny how he seemed to do just fine when he used the Triumph but when he started useing h d he started crashing just about every time he jumped lol but then it was the crashing that made him famous so he probably did the right thing when he switched ?? Sure made him known around the world that's for sure

ENJOY!!!!! NEWT!!!!!

Caesars Palace crash was on a Triumph. Much as I would like to blame HD for the later crashes, I think it was because he was jumping farther pushing the envelope. I think he would have crashed on either machine.

I recall reading or hearing somewhere that Knievel attributed this to the logistics of the place, as the length of his approach run was shorter than what he needed, and thus his take-off speed was a few MPHs lower than what it needed to be.

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Actually, that was a 1967 T120 TT Special, and not exactly your "normal" Triumph.

Nope, sorry Bill, I don't recall being there at Ascot that day, but I did spend many a Saturday night there when the Grand National riders came into town and they'd run the Half Mile and TT events during that era, and with names like Dick Mann, Gary Nixon and Gene Romero sliding around that famed track located just a mile or so from my ol' alma mater, Gardena High.

(...btw...pretty cool you where there at Caesars when Evel JUUUUUST missed that jump)

I remember after busting my leg and feeling very down about it as an 18 yr old with a bad limp.
I saw a poster of Evel doing a wheelstand with his cape flowing and the caption said something along the lines of.

"Even though I'm busted and broken in Half.Even though my body is wracked with pain, I would rather have attempted the things I have and failed, than never attempted them at all.I would rather be a has been than to have never been at all"

That folks got me going forward again

There was a show on the (I think) history channel a few year back, documentary on evel kneivel. Very interesting. But one thing that stuck in my mind about the Cesar's palace jump was that he knew ahead of time that he could not make the jump and land safely (given the setup), but he did it anyway. Hell of a showman!
