A few days ago I was trying to figure out a problem w/ my right cylinder cutting out @ 3800-4200 rpm's. I had only observed this while riding, so I decided to listen while I had the bike up on the jack. Ironically enough I never heard it miss a beat, but I did notice the rpm's surging up & down @ around 4000 revs. Is this normal? Any ideas why? My first thought was maybe a vacuum leak...but everything seems tight.

mouse, Check the vacuum caps very closely for minute cracks. I had the exact same issue and it turned out to be itty bitty cracks in the caps. Replaced them and the problem went away.
A word to the wise is not necessary. It is the stupid ones who need the advice.

Mouse, Did you feel the bike lose rpms or did you see it on the tach?

I was actually watching the tach...looked like about a 100rpm swing w/ the throttle steady. I did replace the rubber caps a few months ago...you're right, they had split quite a bit. The new ones seem OK. Maybe I bought some demon gas somewhere...perhaps I should try some of Dinqua's home brew for an additive. At least if it didn't work I could drown my sorrows.

I've replaced my caps twice now. Is there a better vinal or rubber out there? I know they are cheap at Auto Zone, but why do they crack like that! I can tell just by the lack of power when one goes bad. Maybe the size is too small, or I need a metric size.

You can run a lenght of vacuum hose between the carbs and do away with them all together

Got mine from TeamTriumph. They are a lot more substantial than the caps I got with an AI kit sourced elsewhere.

I just went back to Auto Zone and bought 1/4 inch caps. The rubber looks to be thicker than the 3/16 inch caps. They seem to fit ok, and I've not noticed any intake leak. Maybe these will last longer...

I had a problem with my BA. It was cutting out around 4000 rpm and on up. I could hear a sucking sound coming from the airbox. Further examination revealed the whole side of the airbox to be blown out. Dealer said this probably happened from a backfire. Anyway, it was still under warranty and replaced at no cost to me. Just a thought because I had never heard of that happening.
