He also had a pretty good movie career, and which was rather tough doing at the time he began making a name for himself as an actor, as during that time there were few "TV stars" who would be able to successfully transition to the big screen.

(...RIP, Jim)

He always made me think that he really enjoyed his roles all the way back to Bret Maverick. RIP

He was one of the few to do both TV and movies with success and jump back and forth.

Although it wasn't a super big hit, I always liked his role in the move Grand Prix. Gonna miss him.

"Rockfish" as Isaac Hayes called him in "The Rockford files"

It was even more impressive than that, he transitioned back and forth between TV and film. Never made a bad film or series.

I never heard any bad press about him either, probably a good guy in real life.

From everything I've read he was pretty much like what you saw on screen. He got two purple hearts in Korea. While in the military he was a "scrounger" same as he was in the "Great Escape" and "The Americanisation of Emily"(my favorite). He was a pacifist, but had a sense of duty and served. From all accounts a great guy, it came across on screen.
