Red line from a standing start, slammed it into second and - BAM - busted belt. Luckily only 30 miles from home. My wife brought the truck and rescued me. NoGo -------------------- 04 Speedmaster 07 Ulysses

Bummer to be sure, but how cool is THAT, that you have enough torque to bust a belt! I'd go back to chain for even MORE torque and less grief.
Live to love, love to live.

awesome where there a lot of miles on the belt? You replacing it or going back to the chain?

18,000 miles on the belt. The thought of going back to the chain crossed my mind while standing on the side of the road, but I have a new belt, so I will stick with it for now. Its a chore to replace.

If you had a chain and carry a chain breaker you could have been back on the road in a few minutes and rode the rest of the day. Not to mention the chain probably wouldn't have broken in the first place.

I'm with Ian on this one. Chains may be a pain at times but I have never heard of one breaking, on the other hand I have seen a few of my buddies stranded by a busted belt.

Ever see what a piece of gravel/stone/asphalt between the belt & pulley will do to a belt?

Any of the guys I know with big horsepower bikes all run chains. They do run 3" wide primary belts though.

I was behind a guy (on an America) who's chain broke and took out a chunk of his fender as well. he was lucky he had saddlebags on or it would have whipped up and hit him in the back. Though I agree it's very rare, it can happen to a chain too.

True, I have broken a chain but I also had it fixed in a couple minutes and rode the rest of the day. You will rarely see one break from the HP more likely way over due to be replaced like the one I broke.

You are right, if he had the tools and parts it could probably have been fixed on the road.

the one I broke may very well have been over lubricated seeing as it was on my 66 TR6C that had the breather blowing directly on the chain throwing oil everywhere.

Had time to install the new belt yesterday. Took 4 hours. Last time i removed my swing arm was 5 years ago. Cleaned everything up as long as I had it in pieces. Discovered I need rear brake pads. 65 mile test run today. Seems all better now

I haven't been lubricating my belt and it's still taking the abuse no problem.

Following your lead Ian, I stopped lubing the chain a while back. No issues to report.

Using an X ring chain Keith? Just wondering as I have never ran anything else with no lube. I think in the case of the X ring lube actually attracts dirt and causes more wear since the lube can't get in past the seals.
