Happy fourth of July to everyone! My 09 America efi wont stay running! I've bypassed all safety switches and made sure all the relays are good and battery voltage is good. I can get it to run for a few seconds, if I push the starter button ONLY while the initial "whine" is audible. After the whine stops...nothing. I would like to figure this out for myself (or with help from someone), before going the dealer route. Thanks for any help that could be offered.

What is the resting voltage, motor off, ignition switch off?

That sounds like a bad fuel pump.

resting voltage is 12.8 or better. Ive been dealing with this for about a week and have literally tested everything and bypassed the rest to reduce draw, but still no luck. And tuneecu pulls no error codes. Whats the possibility the ecu is bad?

If I try to start the bike after the whine stops...It wont even click the starter over and I get no spark. I have to push the starter button within 2 seconds of the "whine" starting to get any kind of turn over on the motor.

I don't know if there is a safety switch that cuts out the starter if you have no fuel pressure but it's a thought. There's this issue with EFI Ducatis where the fuel hose inside the tank swells/weakens from the ethanol and won't provide proper fuel pressure even tho te pump is fine. The Duc guys have a hose and clamp solution readily available from NAPA and many do the mod as a preventative maintenance item.

Not saying that is your problem but it sounds familiar, especially since you can hear the pump wind up.

Thanks oldroadie for the info. I will see if I can find the "Duc" mod, and give that a try. Nothing seems out of the question at this point!

That was the forum I frequented during my brief Duc affair. Look for discussions about fuel pumps. Full disclosure: I'd still have that bike if I weren't certain it was going to kill me. Way too fast for my age group.

I would certainly ask a factory qualified Triumph mechanic if there is a safety cutout for lack of fuel pressure before cracking that tank open. EFI systems have pretty high fuel line psi so pay attention to those hose clamps, too, because they are a specialized item.

Is there any test to figure out if the pump is working properly?

I'm sure there is but I don't know it. I also not know if there's a fuel pressure regulator involved although I'd bet it's an all in one unit due to the size of the tank and the need for compactness. It's all high pressure so I don't know if there's a quick connect fitting at the injector bodies you could pull to see if you have fuel delivery. You really need information from a Triumph/Keihin EFI wrench at this point.

Thanks for the help. I really appreciate it. I called a local dealer this afternoon, and as I figured they were tight lipped when it came to any info on the matter.

Which cut-out switches have you bypassed? Just checking in case you missed some. There are ones many people aren't aware of.

Dave,

To confirm, your start button and engine run only works for the first 2 seconds while the fuel pump is running then everything quits? What about lights?

What did it typically do when you turned the key on then went to start the bike? The reason I ask is that on my Rocket, the start button only works after the fuel pump has gone through the 2 second prime when the key is turned on. Sounds like something is reversed. Have you recently performed any electrical mods?

I don't have a circuit diagram for a late model America. Anybody have one to post? What about the start circuit usually supplied in the manual?
