Recently I saw a post about the oil filter getting damaged by road debris causing a loss of oil and damage to the engine. Has anyone fabricated something to protect the oil filter? I looked under my America to see if there was a way to fabricate a shield of some sort to possibly eliminate this issue. I know someone must have done something to protect the oil filter. Anyone that has done this I would appreciate their input.

I wrapped mine with .025 brass shim stock, even if punctured, I should be able to rotate the brass and retighten and essentually have a temp submarine patch to get to town. I am also looking into a feasible relocate as a perm fix. [image] [/image]

I was thinking of making one too, wouldn't be hard to do. Make it similar to the one on some S10 blazers or add on oil coolers for Chevy small blocks.

I made a plate, about 4 by 5 inches that goes under the filter. The plate has four ears on the corners, and the ears attach with steel hose clamps to the bottom of the frame, front and back. (The ears line up with the frame and are on the front and rear of the plate.) I take the hose clamps loose, slide it back and off to change the filter. I always thought I could fab and sell something like this on here, but I've got too many irons in the fire now!

I'm surprised Triumph doesn't install a friction fit chrome cover for the filter, the same as the one on the Rocket. It goes on tight. Should stay put on the America since the same filter is used. Only thing is that it's $38 bucks at Bike Bandit.

I think I'll try that.

$38 is cheap compared to an engine.

Yeah, no kidding. Considering I've had a filter go south, I know it can happen.

I made one out of stainless tube. Swaged it up to a snug fit at work. Tigged a disk base on it to protect the bottom of the filter. A couple of slits allows a hose clamp to keep it snug. Oh yeah a drain hole in the bottom. I got a pic on my puter somewhere if anyone warns to see.

this link goes to what I have so far. http://www.bonnevilleamerica.com/forums/...4&fpart=all the machine work is all done and the parts are anodized. All that is left is to actually install it. I have all of the bits to make up the hoses but after 7 months of no riding weather, it has been pushed to the back burner. If you have access to machine tools to make up your own I would be happy to share the design.

this is a nice 4 jaw chuck and mill project. it was fun to make. can you view acad drawings? if so, any particular format?
a shaper? I haven't seen one of those in more than 30 years! modern milling machines pretty much obsoleted them.

My machines are antiques but in very good shape. To change the back gears on my Atlas lathe I actually have to open the cover and unbolt one set of gears and install another set.
How can you cut a keyway on a milling machine?

I could make them .pdf so no cad is needed. Pm me your regular email and I will send them. Can't do attachments to the pm here.

Way back almost 10 years ago I met up with a guy in Lake George, he had a remote oil filter. Up where the side cover is. Pretty slick setup, altho I didn't get down on the ground to look at particulars. Wish I could remember his handle...

Do you mean like an internal key-way? That's a broaching process usually, isn't it?

The oil filter that I use is made with 1/16" rolled steel. If something can puncture it, then it can also puncture the oil pan. So, I would need something that would protect both.
Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

Viet Nam era issue, 25 meter, M16 A1 sight in w/instruc, army surplus, they come in 50 lb boxes and are constructed from excellent, gov grade craft paper. Guessing were primarily for boot camp recruits during early weapon familiarization and range time. I use them for everything. Well maybe not TP.
