It's amazing what you find when you pull a wheel off for a new tire. My 2 year old sprocket is worn out. The leading teeth have a burr on one side. Also the spacer that goes into the sprocket assembly looks like a pulley belt in that it has two 1/8" ridges. One section of each set of cush appear to have been crushed. They are misshapen.
Is the cause of these defects related?

Don't think it would be from any defects, sounds like some wear from lots of really hard starts.

The stock cush rubbers as they come , are so bloody loose, they wear out faster than they should. Put a proper fitting Thunderbird Sport rubber in and it will last for many miles and your running gear will feel tight, just like it should. And consider buying one of these: Laser_Align

My Trumpet has the original rear sprocket with 60,000 km on it. The cush doesn't have unusual wear or slop. I don't run 'er too hard but I'm not a lightweight either. Food for thought?

They are great and so quick and easy to use.

That little Laser device is as accurate as my Starrett straight edge and the offset plates I made to ascertain perfect alignment betwixt the sprockets. The link I provided may not be the lowest price, one can obtain one for, BTW. IIRC, I paid $64 for mine.
