Cinco De Mayo, The 5th Of May, commemorates the victory of the Mexican militia over the French army at The Battle Of Puebla in 1862. It is primarily a regional holiday celebrated in the Mexican state capital city of Puebla and throughout the state of Puebla, with some limited recognition in other parts of Mexico, and especially in U.S. cities with a significant Mexican population. It is not, as many people think, Mexico's Independence Day, which is actually September 16.
I have no faith in human perfectability. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active - not more happy - nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago.
Edgar Allan Poe

...and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled to allow it to be illegal to wear an American Flag t-shirt on May 5th.

Nothing personally against the celebration, but it appears to be more important in the USA than it does in Mexico. Especially as a marketing edge for the alcohol industry.

Yep, and pretty much just like all the Americans who are "Irish for a day" on March 17th of every year.
(...yep, as they say: "Just another excuse for all the amateur drunks to go get soused"!)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Love the latest Dos Equis radio ad, especially this part:
"Mexican jumping beans ask him, 'How high?'!"

I don't remember hearing any French spoken in Puebla when there 6 years ago. The second Mexican Empire under the rule of an Austrian Maximillian (who's grave site in Innsbruck is to die for.... ) didn't last too long. No hablar Francesse.

OK, guilty. I spent many a celebration on River Street in Savannah, GA. I'm not Irish, but I do have a soft spot for an Irish redhead - even if she's red for just the day.
