"I am an actor and have made movies all over this great land. I've eaten BBQ from Kansas to Missouri to the Carolinas to Alabama and McClard's is the best, no doubt about it..." Let's hope F. Murray Abraham doesn't ever see a map. It could really ruin his day.

I like red sauces, (and mustard and vinegars... ) McClard's reads like one fine bbq joint. Thanks for the mention Dave! Quote:
In a chapter of “The Slaw and the Slow Cooked” that’s devoted to the history of barbecue in the Mid-South, South Carolina-based food historian Robert Moss describes another of this state’s historic barbecue joints, McClard’s in Hot Springs.
“Barbecue was perfect for roadside stands,” he writes. “All the operator needed was some hickory wood and a pit dug in the ground. The cooked meat was simply wrapped in brown paper or placed between slices of bread, so it was cheap and easy to serve. At first, most roadside barbecue stands were seasonal operations and sold food for take-away only. Often, proprietors of other roadside businesses like gas stations or general stores started selling barbecue as a sideline, and some found the sideline pursuit more profitable than the original enterprise.
“McClard’s, the legendary barbecue joint in Hot Springs, is a classic example. Alex and Gladys McClard owned the Westside Tourist Court near Hot Springs National Park. In 1928, they added a barbecue pit so they could sell slow-cooked goat, beef and pork to their guests. According to the McClard family, the fourth generation of which still operates the restaurant today, Alex and Gladys acquired a secret sauce recipe from a tourist court resident who couldn’t pay the $10 he owed for two months’ lodging.
“Fueled by that distinctive red sauce, which has a tomato-paste base and plenty of fiery pepper, barbecue sales took off, and before long the McClards were selling to non-lodgers as well. It was the era of Prohibition, and their barbecue attracted the business of some of the country’s most notorious gangsters, including Lucky Luciano, Meyer Lanksy and Al Capone, who ran bootlegging operations out of Hot Springs.
“In 1942, McClard’s moved into a whitewashed stucco building. For many years, it operated as a drive-in, complete with carhops and a jukebox that broadcast over an AM band so diners could listen to music in their cars. The carhops are now gone, and goat is no longer on the menu. But McClard’s sliced beef, sliced pork and pork ribs are favorites of both local residents and visiting celebrities, including former President Bill Clinton, who lived just down the road as a boy.”
Moss writes that Arkansas’ barbecue tradition goes back almost two centuries.

Jim, Arkansas has a number of world class BBQ places. McClards and Stubbies in Hot Springs, Craigs in DeValls Bluff, Big Johnsons in Wynne. These are all old style single store places with "CHaracter". Craigs character is a very rough looking building but very good BBQ that has a different sauce from any I have ever tried. Whole Hog Cafe has become a chain in the last few years and is the result of BBQ competition by a consistent winner and is my current favorite since it is the only one I can access without a three plus hour drive. There are other very good places but these are the ones that stand out in my lifetime of BBQ hunting. If you are visiting or just passing through you should check them out.

We ate at McClard's during the pre-rally. One of the best places to eat in Hot Springs. I love the tamale spread!

Not sure who chose McClard's but something I recently discovered. If Charlie says "let's eat here" Trust him, that man has a nose for good food

Stubby's was better way back before they got the places they are in now. Back when they were across the street from the vapors.

Thanks Troy for the heads up. The last time I rolled though Hot Springs, I ate at a Subway. I feel so violated. Maybe that's why Cinnamon Girl's clutch started slipping?!

Okay about the rides. Friday: Mt. Magazine (it's almost a tradition). From Hot Springs via Highway 7 to Ola. Across Ar 10 to 309 up to Mt. Magazine. Instead of going back 7 on 10 turn right at Danville catch Highway 27 at Rover then down to US 270 take a left and back to the Springs. Saturday: From Hot Springs west on 270 past Y City (oh the memories )down to Mena then west on Highway 8 (turns to OK63) then take a right in OK and catch Highway 1 (88 in Ar) back to Mena then East on Highway 8 connect with US highway 70 at Glenwood then back to Hot Springs. The OK crew will be going back home the same way on Sunday but I don't think anyone else will be. Let me know what you think.

Friday sounds great. I guess for Saturday we don't have much option with Lake Oachita there to find alternate routes that leave us off the main highway

270 is a pretty nice road. Coming back will be a little different. You're right though, there are not that many ways out of Hot Springs. I think you'll like Queen Wilhelmina Drive though, if you haven't been there. http://images.search.yahoo.com/search/im...na+scenic+drive

Fridays ride is a beautiful one. Hwy 7 is the best riding road in Arkansas. I helped build the visitor center at the top of mt. Magazine. We camped at the campgrounds up there during the build.

After replacing the coil, the America seems to be running smoothly- for now. Toying with the idea of selling it. If it hasn't sold by rally time, I'll ride with you folks.
BTW, Bubbalu's is a really good place to eat. Highly recommend the cheeseburger and onion rings. It's two doors down from me on bathhouse row.

Remember Friday is Mt. Magazine we don't hit Y-city and Mena until Saturday. There's a little place up there we've eaten at a couple of times that has good burgers and pie. Once we ate at the lodge but it was kind of pricey and took a while with all the tourists. And these rides are not cut in stone. Suggestions from people that live in AR or used to or anyone, are more than welcomed. 19 days and counting.

if you are talking about Shirley's, that place was closed last year, remember? probably because of the attitude, definitely not because of the pie!

Fridays ride is perfect. I am not much of a fan of the town Mena but that is what it is.
Today I did about a 250 mile ride....trying to get back in condition for a long ride. Its 365 from my front door to Hot Springs. I use to ride alot but as I stated before I had let everything sit for about a year, after I closed my shop and my wife's dad died (motorcycle wreck). I feel bad because 400 to 500 miles was just a day ride its surprising what a year off does to ya. I got pretty saddle sore.

My butt's gonna be in fine shape. The two weeks before the rally I'm gonna drive 250 miles into nowhere Misouri to measure a job site. the work will start the following month. Now, I don't regularly drive that far for work, but the deal comes with a weekend in a cabin on a lake. After driving down and measuring, I'm gonna head right back home the same day. Client is paying for the fuel and food. Gotta love it!

I haven't heard from Scott so I am riding up on the 15th. I plan to see some family and friends while I am there. Plus its about a 6 or 7 hour ride from here, I want to take my time and enjoy the ride.

Hey guys, not to repeat a thread from General Tech, but the chances of meeting up is looking iffy. Would like to take a long ride but the bike is firing on one cylinder again. Wouldn't be fair to hold you guys back if the bike started acting up 50 miles into a ride. The cdi will arrive a week from now. Once it's installed, the bike will be ridden to and from work. If I'm confident the bike is reliable, perhaps I'll tag along. Kinda embarrassed to admit this, I've ridden all over the state but have never been to Mt Magazine. Friday's ride would be great.

Avon's are good tires. I've been using them on my bird. Yeah we don't want to hang around a gas station waiting for people to plug those cheap car tires either. I'm getting my 24,000 mile service done. The big one where they change all the fluids and adjust the valves etc. The bikes been in the shop for a week. I don't think they know what they are doing. I called two other Triumph dealers and they said it was a 6 hour job.

I always let a bike sit for couple of days before doing a valve job.

Yeah, they probably will CHARGE you for 6 hours, but it might not take that long. My dealer did my valves in less than an hour. I don't see why the oil change couldn't be done at the same time. Don't know about the fork oil, but really, six hours?

Headed down to Osage beach area this morning. 40 degrees, brrrrrr. Got so many layers of clothing on I can't see my beer belly! I guess it's gonna be practice for the rally. And, I got a new fangled, electric deer whistle I'm gonna try out. Review posted here other. Still, promises to be a good day to ride in Missouri. And a good way to map out a short cut to get to the rally. Only a couple of weeks to go. My boy is excited to go to his first rally and I KNOW you guys are gonna be entertaining!
