The gas nozzle in the gas tank, that is! I haven't seen an explanation for that metal "bar" that sits across the inside of the tank, preventing the nozzle from going all the way in. What is that??? I wish it wasn't there since it makes filling an adventure, especially with the nozzles with the sleeves on them. I am able to work around it (although I did give the tank a bit of a gas bath today), but just wondering what the heck that thing is and does!

I believe it may have to do with the fuel pump assembly. As there are several parts and electricity in our tanks it could be there to protect the pump/filter assembly and maybe even us
09 America, some modifications

So I decided to give the "McCuff" a try. If you haven't seen this before, it's a sleeve you put on to the nozzle of the pump so that once you put the nozzle in the tank it pushes the vapor recovery boot that they have on so many of the pumps nowadays back far enough so you can fill your tank without a mess. For the pump I used it on today it did not work - the nozzle still hit that wire or bar at the top of the tank. The McCuff was not long enough to allow the pump to not hit that wire/bar and push the boot back far enough to clear the holes on the nozzle so it would fill. So, I had to assist it with my hand to push the McCuff up further. However, it did allow me to get a good fill on the tank which was nice.
Now, maybe another style of pump will work fine, but it does say that it works on all pumps - that isn't the case with the Triumphs.
I am thinking of using a gasket of some sort to add to the end of the McCuff to give it more length, which may work.
Just an FYI, in case you were thinking of getting one of these.

Then why is it there in my carb 2007 TBA ? At some stations, I'll pull that vapor recovery boot up a little to get the pump to work and then just watch it very closely as it gets to the top.

Am I wrong in that once the fuel level in the tank gets high enough to cover that bar, the tank is full anyway?
I don't like it, and filling up while still in the saddle is not quote as easy as it is on the '04, but it does seem like it's about time to hang the pump nozzle up once fuel gets up high enough to cover that bar....

I assume the issue is the welded in wire that is present in the F.I. type tanks that keep a fuel nozzle from basically entering the tank. If you have a F.I. tank it should be simple enough to remove the tank, remove the hatch to the fuel pump and nip that sucker out with a decent set of cut pliers, or it least would seem that way to me. That wire can only have a purpose as to keep the fuel nozzle from contact with the pump assembly, what else would it accomplish other than that? Even if it's present on a carbed bike tank, again they make nippers that one could remove the offending wire from the outside, I would just cut one side and bend it down and out of the way. Or is there some issue here I'm not seeing? Feel free to enlighten me. As a disclaimer, if anyone should remove that obstruction, it would be that individuals responsibility to always have the presence of mind to not be bumping into their fuel pump assembly when gassing up. My inner Lawyer told me to add that.
