Hi guys - it's been a while since I've posted much, but I'm thinking about buying a new America LT. Had an 04 TBA for 7 years, sold it, currently riding a Bonnie. At 6'2" I'm a bit cramped on the SE (otherwise it's an excellent bike). Sooo... I've got zero experience with the new design, or the 865cc engine. Is the FI glitchy (the Bonnie is a little tedious at low speeds - are the new TBA's and Speedys?)? My issue with the 790 (stock) was power. Does the 865 (stock) have adequate power for mountains / hills like we have in Idaho? I read on the other forum that the new 2013 /2014s won't go beyond about 80-90 mph (they attributed it to the rev limiter) - huh??? Say it ain't so! My 04 was rock solid reliable, how are the new ones?? Thanks in advance!

Check out a T-bird 1600/1700 if you are worried about power.

Way to go, Mike!
Now to get her rigged out for touring duty?
Any story behind that paint?

Thanks Keith, I need to get some miles in the saddle first but I always felt the big bird was a good platform for a tourer. I may go that route, Fairing, hard bags, footboards, etc. You know a geezer bike with power and attitude, like me I looked at the 2014's but just cant pull the $14,000.00+ dollar trigger. As for the paint, the owner had a slow speed tip over and scratched the tank etc. And apparently he likes flame paint jobs It's growing on me but I will probably tone it down a bit.

I saw an America LT at our new dealer here. It looked good. I know a lot of people hate the tank but there are 2 things I like about it. It holds about 1.5 more gallons of fuel and it has no seams. It amazes me that the stock America sitting beside it was only $8599. My new 2002 TBA was $7999. That's not a bad price increase in 12 years. Plus the America had chrome on it that was an option in 2002. Like chain guard, sprocket cover, even a chrome battery cover. There was a new T-bird there that was $13,799 my 2010 T-bird was 12,799. That's a $1000 increase in 4 years. The Bonneville America is still one of the best bargains in motorcycling.

Hi guys - it's been a while since I've posted much, but I'm thinking about buying a new America LT.
Update brothers and sisters. I had a surprise visit yesterday from my good friends Del (Roadie) and Janet from the panhandle of Idaho. Del's been in this ba.com neighbourhood for a long time. Though against the advice of his friends, he has strayed from the brand a time or two. Being the couple's "voice of reason" Janet has a Bonneville. A fast, nimble motorcycle epitomizing the very definition of what a motorbike should be. During our conversation he mentioned consideration of a certain HD that caught his eye. Now what a person has in the stable, is entirely his right. It was still a free country when I got out of bed this morning.
But again being a good friend I can almost sense an intervention in the offing. Another month and I'll be retired, which is another way of saying loose cannon.
Thoughts?
Besides Del started this public discussion

When I bought my 2002 in Oklahoma, I decided to make some time getting out of that benighted state and getting back to the promised land (aka Texas). Took the BA out on the interstate there where the speed limit was 85 (might have been 80...). Anyway, figured out fast that the BA didn't like to try that road... was getting passed left and right and felt like a rolling road block. The bike will do a sustained 80 mph but it felt strained. I am too old to ride at 80 or 85 mph on a bike anyway... hey! It's a cruiser hehe The new toll road east of San Antonio has an 85 mph speed limit and even on a GL1800 that seems kind of stressful. Just too fast for sustained riding on a bike imho. And the new T-bird? Doesn't have the same character as the BA or Speedmaster... looks more like a Vulcan or Road Star. That's not bad; just not classic looking.

I hear ya, Wired! There comes a time, especially for guys (like me)that bought their first Triumph in '70 (Trophy 500, metallic purple, high pipes) that slowing down comes, sigh, more naturally. While BAs may not be Tbirds or Rockets when it comes to speed; I did, however, score my worst speeding ticket in years when I and my BA blew by a line of Harleys, just in time to pass the Stater. The Harley guys all waved when they went by... laughing. Hey Freedom - appreciate the intervention offer - coffee's on

I respectfully beg to differ... "Back in September of 2007, on one leg of my journey home from the Nor'East rally, I rode from Woodbridge VA to Merritt Island Fl non stop. 843 miles in 10 hours 50 minutes: 77.84 average mph. Who'll say these sickles can't haul butt?

IMO the quickest way to get a T-bird looking good is to add that bikini fairing.
