The choppahead guys did it.but,that was a custom build.been thinkin th same thing fer a while meself.

Ryk is referring to switching to an "Earles-type" front end such as the one he posted a pic of, Keith.
Ya see, with a telescopic fork and how it dives during braking using the front brake, the whole "geometry" of a hack setup changes causing the steering to become less stable by pushing the vehicle to lean to one side, and which the operator must then take corrective measures to counter with an opposite input to the handlebars. And whereas, with the inherent anti-dive properties of an Earles-type front end, this doesn't take place nearly as much.

How much of a problem in handlin is it dwight.seen loadsa old pics of side hacks n most of em have teles or springer front ends.is th earls front end a modern invention,cos i prefer the old style looks.

Correcta-Mundo, it's about being able to safely stop. In my state you must also get an extra endorsement to your Dr. Lic. to legally ride with an attached sidecar. I have only rode one, but I gotta say, it is a lot different. I suggest you endeavor to try before you buy.

I would second that suggestion. I have had a cycle with sidecar for a couple of years now, and it definately isn't like riding a motorcycle. Try to find someone who will let you ride one and go very careful for a few miles or so.

chophead, In regards to the front forks on a Side Hack Rig, You do not need to ruin the looks of your machine with the fugley link front suspension. Most Rigs have "normal" forks and manage just fine, me included. If you discover your not comfortable with the stock forks you can order stiffer springs to suit your needs. Now bear in mind that Rigs are VERY different from bikes, there will be a learning curve. Maybe if you want to run the X-Ways across country the Earl suspension would help, but most Hacks are happiest around town at lower speeds anyway, I'm pretty sure by starting with an America your not looking to run high speed touring.

I,m not able to post pics at this time due to brain failure, However if you go to the XL Forum site you can look up "Tin Man 2" in the gallery section you will see a few of my builds, side car included. Also my Side hack build was featured in the May 2011 issue of The Horse Back street choppers mag.

There is a local guy (to me) with a Thruxton and a attached sidecar. He reduced the fork rake a degree and a half (his words) to make the bike and car conform and he says that stopping is better and steering a tad better on the corners, but his forks keep losing seals. I think that's because forks need to collapse to function and side thrust was not engineered into the design. I would never have changed the frame when modifying the trees would accomplish the same thing, just me.
