Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.

"We will gain the inevitable Triumph, so help us God!" (...words to live by...especially if you're into motorcycles at all!) Btw, check out Bing's cover page today, folks. It's a very nice salute to those who perished on this infamous date.

I remember listening to that on the radio. The local cork products factory was immediately converted to make artillery shells and my mother and aunt both went to work there. My father was already involved in the war in Europe, as he joined the Merchant Marine when England came under attack. He was an incredibly brave man, working in the engine room of a Liberty ship (later a larger Victory ship) sailing in "torpedo alley" to deliver food and war material to England, North Africa and Russia. The chances of escaping from the engine room of a sinking ship were negligible at best.

Much of that action was right off our coast here in Virginia and North Carolina. Our tankers and freighters were being torpedoed within sight of people on the beach. Read Operation Drumbeat and Torpedo Junction. Early in 1942 Admiral King stupidly refused to organize convoys and provide destroyers to escort the very ships that were bringing fuel and supplies to the base and yards here in Norfolk Va. He considered it a matter for the Coast Guard who did their best with a few old slow converted cutters. The British saw the problem and sent a few of their own vessels to help protect this critical supply line. On Ocracoke Island NC there is a small cemetery for British sailors who were KIA in a battle with a German U-boat just off the Carolina coast. The US Navy finally changed their position the following year and drove the U-Boats away.
My parents got married just 3 months before Pearl Harbor. Thanks to my dad, uncle and all the other brave men and women of the Greatest Generation.
