I wonder, is there a way to get the ends of the handlebars open? I just unscrewed the tips for the first time and ran into those pieces inside that the screws go into. I'd like to install some internal handlebar heaters but those are in the way. Any ideas? 
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

I guess my question should have included, How are they held in place? Welded? Glued? It's hard to tell from the outside. Has anyone removed theirs? I REALLY don't want to cut an inch off each end.

If I remember correctly, they are just spot welded in. you can use a slide hammer to pull them out or a regular hammer and punch to knock them farther in. The guys on the triple classics have been doing it for years to put aftermarket bar end mirrors on.
What are you trying to do?

I want to put handlebar heaters inside the handlebars. The heating elements and wiring need to go through the handlebars.

they are welded in. the plug is pretty soft steel and I drilled mine out with little effort.
05 speedmaster - 1100cc, 11:1 racing pistons, Carillo rods, thunderbike cams, ported and polished head, 2mm over intake and exhaust valves, Barnett kevlar clutch, scepter pipes, oversize manifolds, 45mm HSR's, TTP stage 4 firestarter
