The gas cap on my 97 Nissan Pathfinder LE failed state emissions inspection, because it didn't hold pressure. That's a first for me for this issue...

How the heck do they test that? PA is tough on inspections.

They remove the cap and use a positive pressure tester to see if it holds pressure; if it does not, then it fails. The rubber gasket is the usual the failure point.

You should have had a check engine light on with an evaporative emission system leak code. Newer vehicles (not sure about your year Nissan) perform periodic self-tests with a small pump in the system that applies pressure to check for evap leaks. Small leaks are a pain and the tech usually uses a smoke machine to find the leak.

'97 Nissan should be OBD2 which will turn on the MIL and set a code for evap leaks.
I understand that some '97s may be OBD1 which will not.

It is OBDII, however no CEL, no code.

And if you understand how to time by ear, you didn't need the timing light
