I've had a couple of Grand Cherokee's but I kinda like the look of this new "Italian" Cherokee. Apparently since Fiat bought in to Chrysler this new Jeep has some Fiat innards. With a 4 cylinder and 9 speed automatic transmission they are talking 30 mpg hwy. It is kind of cute but with 2 different 4 wheel drive systems offered it can still do some serious Jeepin according to Car and Driver mag. http://images.search.yahoo.com/images/vi...BucC&fr=vmnhttp://www.edmunds.com/jeep/cherokee/2014/?sub=suv,

I like the looks of it, but I think 30 mpg is a fantasy. The most mpg I ever got with a car was with my Suzuki Samuri, 30 mpg. Great car, never a single mechanical problem, loved it! But the Samuri was half as big (really small) as this Jeep. One thing I've learned about Jeeps, they all like their gas! As an aside, I remember when Jeep first rolled out the "Compass", they were saying the mileage was going to be 12 mpg. I don't know anyone that ever had one, but I was amazed that a car company would even try to sell a vehicle the got that kind of mileage!

Be nice. It has feelings.
But it does sorta have a little rat teeth grill thing goin' on and little narrow squinty eyes and a tapered butt.

My father just ordered one. Now, here is a guy who, since 1990 has owned: a Grand Cherokee, two Libertys two Cherokees, and two Wranglers. When this one became available, he sat with the dealer, and ordered on piece by piece...
he should have it by 2015!!

I get 30+mpg in my Subaru Outback on the highway. It can also tow a trailer with 2 bikes and plenty of gear with no problem (I believe it's rated to tow 2700lbs), of course it won't give you 30mpg doing that. We took the KLRs and a bunch of gear to southern AZ along the Mexican border for some off road riding, probably 3500+ miles round trip, and it was a champ. It doesn't bog down on Interstate inclines and cruises comfortably at 70mph+ while towing the bikes.
That little boxer engine rocks. I'm glad I didn't bother with the V6 because the boxer does great AND gets great gas mileage.
On top of all that it's made in Lafayette, Indiana. I don't care what multinational corporation gets my money but I do want it to be an American auto worker, preferably UAW, making it.

I rented a Compass at the airport in Colorado last month. Didn't like it and the engine was pitiful. It slowed noticeably on every incline.

Yeah they said that hardorce jeep tradionalist wouldn't like it. I would guess you are in that category, Ian
Remember they are also trying to compete with with the small suv crowd, CRV, new Ford Escape, Hundyai, Kia, Subaru Forester, etc. so thy also have to have the crossover soccer mom appeal to consider.

Yeah the Gladiator was cool. Did they ever actually produce that or was it a concept vehicle?

Sounds like a bunch of new stuff that will have lots of kinks to work out. Have fun and enjoy.
I have no faith in human perfectability. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active - not more happy - nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago.

Yeah The Gladiator was only a concept, really wish it had become production. However there is a company that does various conversions and has several kits availible. http://www.aev-conversions.com/I had the stupid lil compass TWICE ealier this year as a rental car while my Dart was being worked on, it sucked. Low power and horbile MPG. I did like the interior, but I guess that just cause it's Jeep.

When Jeeps were Jeeps. My favorite auto I ever owned was a 93 Cherokee four door Sport, straight six, simple and austere, go anywhere.

I have a 91 straight 6 Cherokee out back right now sitting next to a Comanchee and my 96 Grand Cherokee is out front for sale. I also have 2 CJ style postal jeeps out back. My favorite jeep was a Tuxedo edition from the 60s that my grandfather had. Looked like this one, was white with red seats and red top.

That's pretty cool, Bill. I'm not sure if I've ever seen one of those in person. Sent me to looking for more pics when I found this one... they call it an FC 170 Custom. But perhaps my all time favourite is the Jeepster. I just love that thing!!!

Looks like a commando and I had forgotten about those, I like those too. I know where there are 2 of those flat nose pick ups sitting in a garage and a very similar looking Ford too.

The new Jeep looks like a Pathfinder with a bad grille. Did Fiat sell Jeep to Renault?

No, I don't think so, Ron. It just seems that the Italians don't grap the concept that Americans now evidently believe all vehicles which might be used off-road have to look like un-aerodynamic, flat-faced, sharped-edged big boxes on wheels, that's all! (...you know, that whole "utilitarian" look!)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

It is amazing the number of car companies Fiat and Renault own now. You are right, I guess they don't have to look like the old Jeeps. We are just used to looking at the square look.

You just live in the wrong part of the country Ian. Things don't rust in the desert. I know folks with original vehicles from the '30s that don't have rust. If you really want one, I might be able to hook you up.
