This was kicked around awhile back and I believe the consensus was, you got a slightly different note from the exhaust and lost a bit of power. I tried it too, and went from a total block off to tacking a flat washer in the crossover with about a 30% restriction. I suggest you just plug the tube and see if it works for you before you commit and remove it entirely.

Keep in mind that removing or blocking the crossover will likely reduce max flow.

I removed the tube and welded the hole shut with a freeze out plug. It changed the exhaust not but did not effect the power at all. I run completely open pipes except for the reducer cone, this may be why there was no loss of power. If you have restrictive pipes losing that passage for exhaust gases may effect power output.

Hey Matt, I disabled mine and it made a distinct British twin pop pop pop pop sound in a nice staccato rap, but I did lose a noticeable amount of low end torque.
So, pursuant to the sage advice of a good friend and Triumph guru near me, I enabled the crossover.
And look at it this way, if some vindictive punk tries to cram a potato, rutabaga, beet or some other Eastern Block nation's state vegetable down in your exhaust pipe, you have a crossover tube to alleviate the pressure. Now if they stop up BOTH tubes, well, I really should turn off the expresso maker and try to go to bed.

Unless you go nuts with open pipes and a rejet, it'll mess with back pressure enough for the torque to suffer.

MANY modern race cars, with open exhausts, still have a cross-over (X-pipe). Not a motorcycle, but still a four stroke engine.

Well I already have completely open pipes, (all baffles removed, reducer cone in place) K&N pods and jetted 152.5 mains and 42 pilots. So with the above consensus I don't think it would hurt to try it.

Oh yeah, at that point go for it man! I have damn near the same set up! My only reasoning for keeping my cross over is to help support my pipes.

That is in part because the crossover helps exhaust scavenging & midrange power.

I've done it. I cut the crossover at the exhaust pipe. It gives it a different tone. I think it sounds a lot better. If it looses any power I could not tell it. If you upgraded to free flowing intake/exhaust and rejetted I'm sure that would make any you lost back. listen to my sound clip http://www.bonnevilleamerica.com/resources/audio-video-files/

I blocked it off w/a freeze plug. It made the exhaust sound a deeper pitch but otherwise the same power. What these tubes are good for is equalizing exhaust backpressure between the two sides. If you run an exhaust w/o much backpressure (I use 16" open shorty mufflers) there is really nothing for the pipe to do. Not enough backpressure to begin with. The race cars that use it are the ones with longer exhaust runs that, even if they are open race pipes, have some backpressure do to their length.

I blocked mine with TORs. It impeded performance to I put it back the way it was.

When I first cut mne I had long TORs. I put in a UNI ail filter at the same time and noticed no differance, except for a better sound. If any power is lost I'm sure it's minimal. I since have done a FREAK and 32" turnouts (with a rejet).

Brian t killed it a few posts above.
On a different note, our bikes run like death when the right pipe is wide open and the left isn't. I lost my baffle last night a mile from my house. Sounded awesome. Haha

I've often wondered about that crossover pipe (remove or keep). My pipes are completely gutted out and sportster baffles bolted in place, sounds good and loud and no loss of torque. If get around to some head work then I'll take off the header wrap, cut that clumsy crossover, plug it and re-wrap. That's my 2 cents!

you should plug it with some expandable rubber freeze plugs if you're gwine ta do it, so's you can put it back if you notice a reduction in torque. (i did)

Someone on here, maybe Keith, stated that there were metal freeze plugs at the auto parts store that were a plugin pullout size. Rubber, at the least would stink up the joint.

dang, that's what I meant, NOT those soft black rubber ones, they would melt. i had some expandable metal ones when I blocked mine. U can also block it with a conventional freeze plug if ya get just the right size it'll wedge in, drill it and put a screw in it so's ya can pop it pop it out when ya find no power gain.

I cut mine and welded the holes shut. No power loss at all but I run completely open pipes. Only change was a better exhaust note.
