First, a stated given. I'm barely computer literate. Still, I'm using the new puter today a little, and I really hate windows 8 so far. Why do computer nerds and their enablers have to change everything around just to be different. Oh, yeah, to make it "better". Crud. And, along that line, I'm still wishin points were available on my 02. Nuts.

I absolutely HATED Win8 at first. NOTHING about was intuitive.
The best tip that I can give you is to access your apps through the desktop.
At this point I'm OK with Win8, but man, what I would have given to go back to XP Pro that first week...

4.99 download Start8. It gives you back your start menu and lets you use the Windows 8 like 7 or XP. Its worth the money. Download here

There's a cheap program from Stardock that makes Win8 look like Win7 but still has all the efficiency and goodies of 8.
My wife didn't like her new computer until I put it on there and now she loves it.

Thanks for the advice, fella's. My computer savvy cousin came over last night to help me us with it. He cussed it a lot, but then he figured some of the basic stuff out. It's better today, and I actually kind of like the writing program. I'm gonna run some of the download stuff you recommended by him. One more thing. He says that the virus protection that comes with is crap (McKaffe and Defender), but win8 won't let him install the anti-virus program he recommends. Any advice on that? (He also says that Norton is junk)

My XP Machine offers up the cache for capture. Can you say rhapsody? The lap top has Vista. What the hell is Win8? (just kidding) Maybe its time to toss those MS-DOS 6.22 diskettes in the trash?

I had no problem deleting Norton and installing Malwarebytes Anti-malware Pro (which is the most effective product that I have personal experience with).
Another general Win8 tip: if you get stuck on what to do, place the mouse in the lower left corner of the screen to get the Start icon, & click on that.

Compare the current price of Win7 and Win 8, even Microsoft know which OS is crap by their pricing.

Best Buy, Windows 7 Ultimate is 179 and Windows 8 Pro is 189.
The lower level platforms are all around 100 bucks. Depends on if you buy the upgrade or full version. Very few folks are building their own desktops now. Most newer systems already have home premium 7 or higher.
I would never buy a platform now. You can buy a whole computer now with more power than a 6 year old gamer for about 400 bucks with a platform on it.

Seven and eight are both great operating systems. Win8 is a generational shift, or at least that's the way Microsoft is betting. It's designed for tablets and touchscreens. While it works just fine on 'traditional' computers once you get used to it (or make it behave like Win7), it's just a new can 'o worms.
In a couple years everything is gonna work that way (or, even more likely, like Android) and no one will even remember this fuss.
