Well, I bought a new Dell computer online yesterday. I figured it was time, as the one we use now is at least 8 years old. I don't know crap about puters, kind of a necessary evil to me if you want to communicate and buy stuff online. It's got four times the RAM, whatever that means, but I just suppose it's superior to what I use now. One thing, though. It only comes with windows 8, as 7 was not available on this machine. I've heard a few bad things about 8. Any simple advice from you computer literate beings out there? (It won't be here for a few days yet).

now all you need is to ditch that dial up connection and you'll be set!

I've had a rig with Win8 for a short time and I thought it was more stable and better support than Win7.
I've heard good reviews from their update 8.1 as well.

If you miss your start button. That is the biggest complaint folks seem to have. This used to be 4.99 Start8Then there is the free Classic Start 8

Oh, for sure, I ordered a couple of quarts with the machine so I wouldn't have to ask for it in the aisles of Wally World! Most of those stoopid young people who work there just give me a funny look when I ask for it, but there's usually one understanding young man who will help sell me a quart or two. I remember having a devil of a time finding figuring out where to add it with our last computer. Finally, my wife said she would take care of that particular maintenance chore. It's about time, I take car of everything else, including checking her fluids regular! AND, for your information Dave, I don't need anything faster than dial up to keep ahead of YOU on here. My lightning fast riposte will suffice, thank you very much!

My first computer had 2 MB (NOT GB) of RAM and a one hundred megabyte hard drive.
...or, about a billionth the power of my current phone.

I also bought a new HP laptop in April to replace the 12 year old desktop. It came with windows 8. A local computer shop installed some kind of "patch" that makes 8 look like 7. I know 8 is good, but I wasn't sabbe' enough to be intuitive with it. At least now I don't get lost.
Oh, and I upgraded from dialup to high-speed wireless modem in the process.

I use Dell oil even in my HP. It seems to work much better. Increased mileage, more responsive clutch, and its much cleaner when I change it. I do stick with the oem filter though.

I put the Stardock start menu on my wife's new laptop because she was so much more comfortable with Win7. It was very cheap. http://www.stardock.com/products/?from=navAs far as stability, I've never heard of Windows 7 crashing so I'm not sure how much more stable you can get. I'm sure Win8 is 'more stable' but how high is up? Do you guys use full synthetic?
