Ready for download today is the new iOS7 from Apple. And while this may not seem all that important to some of us here, for others it's what we use to get into this place. I'm just downloading it now on my iPhone. It's taking forever. Anyone have it yet on their own iDevice?

Finally got it installed. Does seem a bit ugly. Will have to give it a day or two to see if I like it.

Macs remind me so much of Harleys. They both survive more on marketing than performance. I've never understood the loyalty they maintain with their 5% market share that has pretty much stayed the same forever.
An old friend convinced me that, if I gave Apple a chance, I'd never go back to Windows (or Android these days). I bought a G4 Powerbook when they were the latest thing. I gave it over a year. All Apple all the time (as much as possible with their tiny market share). Right after I started I migrated to OSX. First off, I was astounded that the OS wasn't backward compatible and all my software was now worthless. Start from scratch. Buy everything all over again.
My shiny new Mac was sooo slow, too. I was always waiting for it to catch up with my input.
Nothing in the OS seemed to follow any logical sequence. It all seemed random. When I'd ask someone 'in the know' a how-to question I'd get an answer like, "Well, just hit question mark, pound sign, F2, and plus sign."
"How am I supposed to know that? It's not in any help file and there's no manual."
"I don't know. You just do. I learned it in school."
"The schools quit using Macs 15 years ago."
"Maybe you should take one of those Mac cruises."
Or, after trying forever to find a document I'd just completed I'd be told, "Click on the 'hard drive' icon. It's in there."
No $hit. It's on the hard drive. Thanks.
It rarely connected to WiFi spots. I'd hit 'connect' and it didn't. All the help file offers you is 'hit the connect icon'. If that doesn't work? Hit the 'connect' icon. You aren't allowed to access the settings. To be fair, it was nearly flawless connecting to Apple routers (Airport) but nobody uses those because they are so expensive for a low power router and have poor security.
One of the offices I frequented only had a Mac desktop I'd access to print from. I carried a thumb drive for such occasions. The Mac had USB ports galore. The problem was, it only provided enough 'USB juice' to handle the keyboard and the printer. The other 4 ports were useless as the keyboard and printer were all the computer could handle at a time. I had to unplug the printer to download off the flash and then plug it back in to print..
My current ultrabook has the same processor, a better high end dedicated video card, more RAM, more ports, better battery life, as a MacBook Air for less than half the price. The only difference between the two is that awful Mac operating system that I was cursed to use for over a year. The MacBook I use for comparison has great hardware...for an $800 computer (what I paid for my ultra). But they want $2,200 for it.
Apple had an ad campaign a while back and their tag line was 'it just works'. Well, in my experience, they interface well with other Mac products. They perform miserably with products from other manufacturers. I'm sure you Mac 'lifers' out there get better results because you know the tricks...but doesn't that defeat the whole claim of ease of use?
I'm always amused when I hear a Mac aficionado (my friend who talked me into my Mac experience is a prime example) say something about Windows machines 'crashing all the time'. I'll bet I haven't had a Windows machine crash in ten years. Maybe more, it would have been a machine running Windows 98 or earlier. Nothing past XP has ever crashed on me and I have computers all over the house (I'm a gearhead and, as they are all backwards compatible, they interface fine). My Mac used to lock up once a week...on a good week.
I even gave them another shot with the iPad as it seemed like a logical direction to take. All the same issues.
The new Nexus 7 tablet (2013 version) also leaves the iPads in the dust. You can do pretty much anything a laptop can do on it whereas the iPad is very limited if you try to use more than one program at a time (who only has one program open at a time?). I bought an iPad for traveling but it just sits in my shop and I use it for internet radio now. The Nexus 7 even has a better display than the highly touted 'Retina' display. Once you get used to Android OS (which, by and large, feels just like Windows to me) you have a full fledged computer in your hand. I was just reading an article that claimed that, by 2016, Android will be on more new machines than any other operating system.
I also got a Kindle Fire HD as a gift and I prefer it to my iPad as well.
Interestingly, Macs are, at this moment in time, at a higher risk for viruses than PCs. They had always been ignored in the past but, this is a guess, the iPad has enough numbers that they've drawn the attention of the bad guys. As there isn't an infrastructure in place for dealing with the issue, as with PCs, Apple has been scrambling to catch up.
Different strokes for different folks. If Apple wasn't out there innovating (and, by gosh, they do innovate) everyone else probably wouldn't push as hard. From my observations, Apple is frequently the first but they are rarely the best.

Well, different strokes indeed.. I mean, whatever you like and are used to is fine by me. I'm no fan-boy of either... besides the fact that I've had Macs for more than 20 years around me. I won't tell you what to use. Figure that one on your own. From my experience (design and music) Macs have been way easier to deal with than PCs. Even today. I've got a very flaky piece of recording hardware from Presonus. Their drivers are horrible, but I've found that it would work well enough with Macs own system software, not using the Presonus drivers. So, I have a working unit. PC owners are still waiting for a driver update as nothing else works... for close to 2 years now... not even funny... don't get me started on that one. On a related note, I haven't downloaded the iOS7 update for my iPad2 yet... So far, I see that you agree that it is ugly, but does it perform well enough?

I haven't had an Apple system in years but back in the performa days I really liked the OS and was very user friendly but I couldn't run most of the programs I wanted to. About 10 years ago I was in the market for a new deskt6op and wanted a MAC but when comparing the MAC was 3,500 for 1/2 computer I ended up getting for $1,800 in a windows based machine. I actually still have that hooked up with the one I am on now and both work perfectly and have never frozen or crashed on me. That being said I take care of them, clean out all the temp crap, defrag, scan disc etc...
All that being said including what was posted above by others , my daughter loves her Iphone but my friend at work sold his shortly after getting it and bought a droid, so guess it's what you like and are used to.

I haven't downloaded iOS7 for my iPad yet but on my iPhone it seems a bit slower. Screen refreshes don't have the instant 'pop' they had before, and the keyboard seems a bit slow. Still to soon to fully evaluate but let's put it this way... I'm holding off 'upgrading' my iPad for now.

Don't wait. I've got an iPad2 and iOS7 works fine and just as fast on it.
No problem so far, and the update went smoothly.

Karen updated her 4S and iPad gen 3 wth no issues. I did my 5 and mini with no issues. The overall interface is fine. A bit different with improved (to me more intuitive) motion commands. I didn't realize it until Karen mentioned it but for all out devices we seem to be in and out of apps much faster. There are a couple apps that need to be updated due to some bugginess...namely the Chive but in time it will be fine. Overall worth doing the upgrade and still happy IOS users. And FWIW.... I still like my S3 for work but it is starting to get really slow and the battery life has gone to crap. My iPhone has not :P

After some apprehension, I installed iOS7 on my iPad 3 too (I'd done my iPhone 4 already). Now that both devices are upgraded I have to say I like it just fine. I'm not sure why I was reluctant to 'change' but let's just chalk it up to being over 30. Nothing is amiss and the new interface is really quite an improvement. My only beef is that up here in the land of short riding seasons and mukluks, we don't get iTunes radio.

Isn't it the same as Pandora or similar?
I can't update my Iphone yet. Have to wait for the IOS 7 jailbeak to come out so all my non Apple store apps will work. I need access to the APN to make it a mobile hotspot for free.
My son and daughter have the same reaction that it works fine but looks flat.
Almost two years with Straight Talk by the way. 50.38 including tax and fees a month for unlimited calls, text, pictures and data with no contract. You just have to provide the ATT type GSM phone.

You lost me here a few times here. I'm not familiar with Pandora (except in reference to a box) and I have no idea what you mean by 'jailbreak' or APN. Beyond that I might be able to surmise what 'Straight Talk' is by the name but again am lost by what a GSM phone could possibly be. Yet somehow in all of this I know what iOS7 is. That can't be normal.

Pandora is a music streaming site, Jailbreak allows you to use things on the Iphone from 3rd party that apple doesn't allow, GSM is how the phone connects and stands for Global System for Mobile communication.

Why would he need to Jailbreak it if theres an app for Pandora? I run Pandora on my iPad and iPhone not to mention other devices and never had any issues.
Keith, check out Pandora. Its free if you dont mind a commercial here and there or you can pay (try it free first).

Thing with Pandora is you choose an artist, then they choose for you based on that first choice. So say a Tim Buckley choice. You might hear 'Buzzin Fly' then you'll hear 'Needle and the Damage done. Yes the Neil Young back when he could enunciate. You will hear more Tim Buckley too. That selection would be labeled "Tim Buckley Radio". Which, per above, is a misnomer. Or say you choose to create a new station, Say LaVern Baker. You'll hear 'I Waited Too Long' then the next song might be Solomon Burke singing 'If You Need Me'. Or create a Billy Eckstine radio station, where they'll play 'Jazz Round Midnight' then the next song might be Nat King Cole's 'The Very Thought of You' Once you get your head around the FACT that they use your choice as their basis for choosing songs/artist for you, you'll come to appreciate the simplicity of it and how that weighs vis-a-vis hearing only the Artist you really want to listen to. Damn, Little Esther's 'Turn the Lamp Down Low' is in que. gotta go...

I have both Pandora and earbits on my IPAD but prefer Spotify. With Spotify you type in artist and scan albums and they play it through..with commercials but can purchase premium for $10 per month..Earbits is commercial free

Went looking for Pandora and couldn't find it. As mentioned before we don't get to have iTunes radio north of 49 and I imagine it's the same with Pandora. I've seen this before with certain apps. I'll checkout the others mentioned. I do have Tunein Radio which seems to work but may not be the best... only way to find out is to try a few streaming music apps.

There are many who seem none too happy with the OS7 . Some folks dont like change much. I guess beauty is in the eye of the beer holder. Hope it works out great for y'all.
I have no faith in human perfectability. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active - not more happy - nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago.

I mentioned jailbreaking in the event he found a non-iphone approved app available in his area.
Example would be the Cydia folks may have independent appz for music that would be good but you can't get them via the Apple store.

IOS 7 trashed all of my email settings on the iphone. Had to delete them all and recreate on the phone. Not that difficult to migrate email, someone had their head up there...
