Have not thought about it really. But maybe I should have, that is very scary. I live on the gulf coast of Florida and you learn early here that lightning can crack with minimal cloud cover and no rain. One more thing to worry about

Your chances of getting hit by lightning are pretty slim, but those odds increase greatly if you increase your exposure to lightning.

Personally, I will not ride through a thunder storm again. We have had a couple of very, very scary experiences with thunder storms.

Rain is OK. Lightning, not so much.

You are waaaay more likely to be struck by lightning than to be bitten by a snake or attacked by a shark but people are still afraid of it happening.

I recall a news story back when I lived in CA about a motorcycle being struck by lightning. I thought it was odd because lightning is not that common in the central valley (compared with other areas) and that it happened on a dry day. As I recall, the direct strike exploded the gas tank and the rider was killed, explosion or subsequent crash I dont know which.
I suppose just about anything can happen, so no point in worrying about it.

If you are struck by lightening once you are more likely to be struck again. So I have heard.

I have no faith in human perfectability. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active - not more happy - nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago. Edgar Allan Poe

True. But you can prepare for it by avoiding riding in thunder storms. I learned my lesson.

I worked three lightning strike deaths as a paramedic and I had my hand on the aluminum boom when the aluminum mast was struck by lightning while motoring back from Looe Key in the Florida Straits back in my sailing days.

As my wife and children were below and I didn't want anyone else topside all I could do was shake it off, grab the tiller, and keep going. Obviously, it wasn't a major hit (as I can write this) but I've always been very careful about getting off the water in a storm ever since.

That $hit hurt.

Several years back, a friend of mine was struck in his patrol car a block away from my house. Blew out his radio and all the wiring on his car. Couple of weeks later, same intersection, he was hit aqain. This time it took out all his electronics again, but also blew out one of his tires.

Me, I was sitting on my back step watching a storm. Went inside for ao moment to get a glass of tea and BAM! lightning hit a pine tree about 15' from where I had been sitting, followed a root under the slab (left about a 2" crack) and popped the light bulbs in almost every light in the house.

I still find lightning fascinating, but when I feel the hiar on my arms stand up - I go back inside.

A guy in Gatineau was struck riding home from work a couple of years ago he was passing a big metal sign when it struck him and he died. Nasty bit of nature not to be trusted.

Haven't you mentioned your house has been struck by lightning a couple of times, Ian? I think that's what Bill was referring to.

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Here's a little more of the details of what happened.

Motorcyclist hit by lightning in stormy end-of-week weather

He's still a lucky bastard !

Good memory, didn't make that connection. Yes my house has been struck several times in the last 10 years.

Ian, if you've got pine trees withn 50', cut them down. I had the same problem for a few years. Not direct hits, but strong enough to fry electronics.

Years ago they used to say that an automobile was a safe place in a lightning storm --- I guess that's not true anymore. Wasn't there something about rubber tires helping too? Another false fact I guess...stay low or out of the storm entirely sounds like the only wise thing anymore...

That, and I seem to recall you being at a golf course a few years back and getting your mug on TV after a lightning strike quite near you.
