So my carb boots are cracking, again... The bike is 11 yrs old, I know rubber gets old and cracked, but I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to protect it? I'm considering getting the billet intakes to replace them, but they have a rubber component too, and if that's going to fail, then why bother, ya know? Does Armorall help? Something like that? My bike is running a little rough, I'm guessing from an air leak from the boots or vacuum caps somewhere, and before I take the time to tear it all apart, I'm trying to do some homework Thanks guys!

I don't know if it beneficial or not, but I clean and spray straight Silicone on all the rubber bits when I have the bike apart. It's almost always 100% syn. Rubber nowadays, that's why your tire's sidewalls will rot out, regardless of actual mileage. BTW, I don't spray the tires.

Rubber Protectant is decent stuff at a good price. Armorall seems to break down quickly so you need to reapply often. Then you need to buy more...good business model eeh?
A word to the wise is not necessary. It is the stupid ones who need the advice.

Thanks guys! I have this dim little light in the back of my head that says not to use silicone, but I can't remember why, and that may be because of natural rubber not the fake stuff!

I smoothed polyurethane caulking over cracks on mine. That was several years ago... seems to be holding.

the rubber on the billet intakes is nothing like the oem, its thickand very rigid, thats why you don't need a carb brace when you are using them, holds the carbs no problem, i still run the brace mind you but only becasue it was part of the freak kit.

Good to know thanks. I have a carb brace also, I'd leave it just as insurance... I ordered new boots from Bike Bandit. $12 item, hard to pass up. Next time I do some major maintenance I'll consider the billet intakes for sure. I just want to protect my investment if I do decide to get them!

Armorall is a bad idea on rubber products, it degrades the rubber.

Armorall is a bad idea on rubber products, it degrades the rubber. It even voids tire warranties at work as chemical damage.

One thing i did and recommend is to have them powder coated black first otherwise in a few months they are going to look purple on ya. Just an FYI
