Bonneville America Forums Forums Off Topic Discussion Forums Lounge BOAT GUYS!...troubleshooting sterndrive solenoids.

Hey I need some solenoid knowledge, marine category. My mercruiser 3.0 sterndrive will raise but wont lower. I only get a clicking sound. From what I understand theres 2 solenoids, one for up, one for down. It looks like one was replaced and the others old. So I'm leaning towards popping a new one in but I figured I'd make sure its bad first.

Aside from checking all the terminals for corrosion, I've read before about "jumping" solenoids to troubleshoot the problem. Will this work? Just a piece of romex wire to jump?

Don't know much about boats, except that it's a hole in the water that you money into, but a solenoid is a solenoid. Sure, jumping it should tell you something, or testing with an ohm meter. I would guess that it may very well be bad though since one has been replaced.

Sounds like solenoid. Merc Alpha-1 Gen-2? What year? Check for corrosion and clean grounds always especially in if running in salt water. Spray wire connections with Boeshield T-9 when done.
