Thinking about renting a car for a small family trip, three days in Hannibal. Any advice or pitfalls to look out for in renting cars?

Use a visa gold or platinum card for the rental and they usually cover the auto insurance for you. Your own auto policy may cover rentals too.
Insurance and the full tank of gas on return are biggies they sock you for. Be sure to wait until just before dropping it back off to top it off. Do not let the car shop sell you the extra gas, they will kill you with their cost. Do not buy a full tank from rental guys either, that is a big money maker since you rarely use the gas you end up paying for.
Also be sure to go over the car with a fine tooth comb and have the rental shop document EVERY scratch, chip and especially stone chips on the windshield. Do not leave the lot until you have a signed off inspection sheet with all details noted. Do not trust the lot, they will charge you lots of $$ for every nick ding of chip when you return if it is not on the original invoice.
The Hertz at DFW airport tried to charge me $1500 for a windshield once. I had the slip, no pay. Chip in glass was there when I rented.

A word to the wise is not necessary. It is the stupid ones who need the advice. Pat

Use Enterprise, they always treat me very well plus will pick you up to go get the car as well as drop you off after you return it free of charge. You don't have to worry about gas with them either, they charge less than the gas station so I let them refill it. With Enterprise your insurance will cover it but I buy their insurance anyway since if you do you can bring the car back as a cube on a flatbed and not have any charges. I have rented from them multiple times they always made it a very pleasant experience and wasn't expensive comparatively.

As above. Most auto policies DO cover rental cars but they usually push hard to get you to buy insurance that pretty useless anyway.
