I'm torned right now, and I usually don't have that feeling.
I usually either do or don't... but in this case, it is really hard for me to decide.
I have an opportunity to sell my America.
Reasons are that I haven't ridden it so much in the past year. Bad weather, too rainy, too hot, excuses galore... but mostly because my other passion is taking over at the moment. I love surfing! And it's really hard to carry the wife and 2 boards on the America! No, I'm not getting a trailer for it! ha!
Pretty much all my free time is spent chasing the waves. That leaves almost no time to ride.
Don't get me wrong, I still am in love with my America. Every time I go out, I get a grin from ear to ear. It's a great feeling.
But, a buddy offered me a price that is more than fair for my beloved America, and I am tempted to sell, and get a small van instead, to help with the wave chasing!
I still love my bike but I don't spend the time a bike like that deserves.
Sorry for rambling. It's not a life or death situation. It's just me wondering what should I do, because it pains me to see my bike motionless in the garage, but I'm sure I will have many regrets if I sell it.

I completely understand. In January I tore the meniscus cartilage in my right knee, right where my knee bends when I sit on the America. Work kept a surgical repair at bay until mid June and the bike sat idle. It will sit longer, too, because work kicks in at a furious pace next week and that will keep me out of town and away from the bike. I'm still not certain I'll be comfortable sitting cruiser style once I have the opportunity because the doc carved on the femur while he was in there. Still pretty sore.
Daily I have urge to post my beautiful bike for sale because it kills me to see it sit. But so far I've managed to put off the urge. It's depressing, though, because I know what a wonderful machine it is and it should be ridden, even if by someone else.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. Herm Albright (1876 - 1944)

I used to sail. Same dilemma. I couldn't make a choice. I did get rid of the bigger boat and I'm building a little 10 footer. Couldn't get along without a bike, though.

I used to play golf a lot before I bought my Triumph. Choice was easy for me.

The real choice is this. If you keep it, you will occasionally see the bike in the corner, think, "Still here is it? Might as well take a little ride". Or, see the empty corner and think, "Looks very empty over there, wish I'd kept it."

Well triumphs are good for going to work and to the store and visiting friends, having a beer at the pub. Moon lit rides with the little woman. It would be hard to do that from a surf board. But if you are making excuses not to ride you may have lost your zeal for it. People change we grow, we develope new interests. When ya get too old to surf you will want another bike I promise.
I have no faith in human perfectability. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active - not more happy - nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago.

Ed I really feel for ya and hope you heal quickly. In the mean time if you would like to leave yer bike with me during tour I have enough room in the garage.

I have a boat in the back yard, 4cyl inboard. It has been sitting there for years now never in the water since I am on the bike any chance I get. Any day nice enough to use the boat I am riding.

i used to race proffesionaly R/C nitro cars (ya ya go ahead aand laugh) full sponsorship and everything, loved that sport like crazy, but its a money pit, thousands of dollars invested, got a bit older went a bit less, stopped racing the big races (to far etc) stuff sat there, could not let it go so much time and money, figured one day i will get back to it, but finally came to the conclusion that i was done with it and likley would not get back, so sold it all and bought something i would use and enjoy. I could never be without a bike, but then again i still LOVE riding and still have the time and not much else in the way, to be honest, they are not the most pricey bikes out there, could always buy another one :-) sucks though i know.

Add up your cost of ownership - probably very little compared to the occasional enjoyment you get out of it. I knew going in to buying mine in '06, that it might sit for extended periods. One of the reasons I wanted an air cooled, simple bike. Sometimes I have to make an "appointment" with the Triumph and sometimes I have to reschedule that appointment, but when I do...

Is there a 12 steps program for not giving up a Triumph? I gave it up for years but I came back! (does that sound like a tag line for a commercial)

Thanks you all.
Matt, that picture was so funny! The surfboard and hockey gear!
I'm still undecided. Yesterday, I went on a short ride, and of course, I thought that I didn't want to sell anymore! But this morning, my buddy sent me a message that he dreamed about my bike....
Triumphs have a way to make you fall in love!
PS Keith, don't worry, whatever happens, I'll stick around.

ha ha! most of my surfing spots are really shallow, so not many sharks around here. Knocking on wood at this precise moment... I forgot to mention one more thing that makes it hard to let go... the tall backrest that my wife loves so much was sent to me by none other than the Good Friar... Looking at the backrest always keep him around my thoughts... But on the opposite, we've had hordes of mainland chinese tourists around here. What was a nice coastline ride a couple of years ago, turned into a slalom / bus dodging 45-minute ride. During that 45 minutes, I counted 72 buses passing on the opposite lane. Dreadful! Knocking on wood at this precise moment again ... One more reason why we don't ride so much anymore. Roads have become unsafe. This is an example.. no, in Taiwan we are supposed to drive/ride on the right, this is not Japan...

The bus looks like it is about to drop down into the corner on its inside wheels and the driver probably wishes they could. Yikes!

Jeff,
Don’t sell it. Even if you’re not riding much now, you’ll be sorry later on when you want to ride and it’s not there. If it’s paid for, the cost to you are minimal (tags & ins). If it’s not a financial reason to sell it then keep it.

Good news!
Well, it was not a financial issue, besides it would have helped buying a "surfing" van for camping around.
Been talking with my significant other, and we decided that we can continue using our tent, and postpone the van thing.
Also, my friend had other major problems and it meant that he will have to wait before buying my bike.
So, I guess I can read the signs.... And I will follow the general consensus here and NOT sell my bike.
Funny, but I feel relieved and light hearted this evening as we decided to keep the America, no matter what!
So, for sure, I'll stick around and still bother you all from time to time!
Thanks and ride safe... always!

I used to have one on my "Hardly Kymco Davidson" some years ago! Can't bring myself to do the same thing to my America! ha ha!
The America is there for when there are no waves... like today! Planning on a 1 1/2 hour ride to get the best and most fresh sashimi. They unload the fishing boat next to the restaurant and it's on your plate!
