quite a concept. that ability to use valve profiles that would impossible mechanically, really opens up the potential of the IC.

Tucker tried that once in 1946. He used hydraulic actuators controlled by a controller much like an ignition distributer. But for problems with foaming oil, the potential was there to vary valve lift and timing using the same technology that existed for automatic ignition advance and diesel fuel injection.

"POINTS", Ian?! Man, you really ARE into old technology, aren't ya ol' buddy!
There of course is no need for "points" anymore what with modern electronic and computerized ignition systems, which can of course control engine firing and emission controls and fuel economy MUCH better than could the use of points!
(...though I know how much you love taking that piece of sandpaper with ya every place you go, "in case of emergency"!)
AND, btw guys...this "Free Valve" actuation principle/concept has been around for decades, though nobody as of yet has perfected the concept enough for mass-production. I know Audi and Peugeot have been or were at least working on an "Electronic Magnetic Solenoid" version of this same concept for many years.
(...I give this another decade, and then you'll probably start seeing this replace the mechanical Cam-Drive valve actuation on reciprocating internal combustion engines on some cars, or even motorcycles)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Kinda funny how it seems the older the technology, the more desirable to obtain. People are paying astronomical prices for that "old technology", probably due to the "Coolness" factor, and the investment value. However, the "main streamers" will always be in the majority, buy new, and see their investments depreciate. (Unless, of course, they hold on to their depreciating technology until it becomes "old technology", at which time it will start to appreciate again. Like Ferris Wheels unbound!

the "turn bright lights on" switch on the floor should make a comeback.

That is awesome, moving all those lifters push rods and rocker arms take a lot of energy. I don't worry about the electronic modules of the past anymore because You don't see too many computer failures like they did 20 years ago. But some manufacturers can beat You to death with updates all the time that they want to charge You for.

There are other companies doing cam-less stuff too. I've also heard that spark plugs are going bye bye in the not too distant future, to be replaced by lasers.

I can see it now... How did you drill a hole through your piston and out through the crankcase? Well I wanted more power... so thought a stronger laser would do the trick......
