I'm planning on replacing my chain/sprockets, and was wondering if I need to replace the cush drive while I'm there. How do I know if the cush drive needs replacing? If I replace it, should I go with a new one from an America, or the one for a tbird sport? Thanks.

See how much movement you have on the sprocket with the rear brake locked. If it's more than just a bit change it. In fact if it's the original it might be a good idea to change it anyway. I went with the T-Bird Sport cush drive about 30k ago and it's still tight. It does take a slight bit of persuading with a soft mallet (I used a four pound dead blow) to get it in but well worth it.

It's original, just over 20k miles. I'll see how much movement is there.

Put in the TBS cush rubbers and you'll be well pleased, it really tightens up the driveline. Mine was tight but a dab of silicon spray kept me from having to resort to the mallet.

The Tbird part # is T2012211 That's the old triple TBS and not from the new Thunderbirds.

Yup, and it's the tbird sport, not the regular tbird, right? Thanks Ed.

No positioning of bike needed. Simple grasp the rear sprocket and rotate it fore and aft. You can't? your cush rubbers are tight. You can? Then how much? The more you can rotate the rear sprocket, i.e., the more play you have, the more snatch you'll have at take offs and hard roll ons. Prudence had about 1/2" play at 1,182 miles. She now sports a thunderbird cush drive.

I bought the TBS cush drive, going to install with new chain and sprockets when time allows.

The cush drive for the America, and probably the Bonnies, too, is actually five or six separate identical pieces. Its okay if they are not connected to each other, they were only connected to each other during tte molding process. They are even able to be interchanged in their sockets.

Yeah, both my old one and the TBS were one piece although I can see how the tabs might separate over time.
