To pass the time during a meeting, I divided 1710 by 12. It came out that the Allison 12 cylinder V1710 used in a lot of WWII fighters displaced 142.5 cubic inches per cylinder. I then tried to imagine a vertical twin with 2 of those. Got an extra project tossed at me for smiling. An imaginary ride on a 285 cubic inch Triumph was worth it.

A thing I thought about some years ago, but it would be easier to do with an S&S V twin bottom end. The Lycoming O-360 is an air cooled flat 4 with a 5 1/4 inch bore. 2 of those barrels stuffed into an S&S bottom end with a 4 inch stroke would make just over 173 inches. That's about 2.83 liters for the inchic impared. Bet that would be hard to kickstart!

You can't kick start a Lycoming (or a continental). You'd have to "hand prop" the thing.

I was thinking about a radial engine myself. It would need about a 4-foot seat height, though.

Ok Guys why are you thinking so small. Use 1 big cylinder actually. 1 shaft Turbine. 1 intake, Allison 250,up to 40,000 lbs of thrust. Now that will make a Bonney Fly. These engines are used on Bell Jet Ranger Helicopters. I actually saw one of these in a Joh Deere Riding mower at the state fair! You will definitely need heat shields with this exhaust.

Saw a pic of a guy who'd sawed off 2 cylinders from an Allison radial & made a V-twin out of it.
The ex-Father-in-law actually saw the bike at Sturgis 10 or so years ago. He said that it could be heard for a couple of miles when the dude cranked it !!

If you want to be true to the Triumph only a Merlin will do.A British made one at that, not one of those state side ones built durning WWII. Vegas

Actually, there IS a 12 cylinder airplane motor sitting in the garage where I have been doing all the recent work on bikes. I keep joking about fitting it into my bike, maybe I'll give it a try. I bet I could then give a r3 a run eh?

The Vance & Hines Harley drag bikes are around 160 cubic inches. I don't know the bore and stroke, but whatever they are, they've gotta be BIG!

while you guys are BSing , you need to call BIG DADDYS up in Oak Harbor WA. Ask for Don A.K.A "big daddy" and ask him about the bikes he made by doing just that w/ some kind of raidial jugs. He has the picks on his wall. I thought it was some Knuckelhead I had never seen b4. pretty cool stuff.
