I have some front end work being done on my bike. Long story short the guy said when he hooks up the cable to the speedo it isn't engaging in the speedo. He's wondering if he lost a part. He called the local triumph shop (so did I) and they said there is no gizmo that could be missing. Any ideas what might be wrong???

How does you know it isn't working, did anybody ride it to find this out? At any rate, you can always see an exploded view on the Bike Bandit website, look under OEM parts>Triumph>03 Americe/Speedmaster>Speedometer, that is if you don't have a manual.

Hermys has the exploded views on their website now too. There is a gear on the back of the speedo that is easy to check. If he had the front end apart maybe he didn't get the drive at the wheel engaged properly. If that is the case and everything was tightened back up it is probably damaged now.

Thanks for the quick reply guys!!! So it sounds like there is no little gizmo that could have been misplaced between the cable and speedo 90 degree angle connector on the back correct? If that's the case then based on what you guys are saying it sounds like either the cable broke or it's the drive. I understand the drive can be had for around $15. Does the wheel need to be pulled to do this? Also what is the easiest way to determine whether it's the cable or the drive w/o replacing one or the other first?

The wheel would have to come off...just enough to put the speedo drive back in....
Take the cable loose from the drive and at the meter....get something to turn the cable (you can do it by hand) and see if it turns at the other end of the cable...if it doesn't the cable is broken..
If I can find my speedo drive you can have it...will look this weekend

OK, just talked to the due and I had it all wrong (sorry guys!). It's the other end of the cable. He said it seems to be missing the piece that goes into the speedo drive at the wheel. In other words the black L is there but there is a piece that should protrude out of that, that then inserts into the drive and that is what appears to be missing. Can these come off of the cable and get lost?

Yes, the drive cable has failed. You want to ascertain the missing part of the cable isn't still lodged in the speedo drive. Lots of members on here have gone to electronic pick-up speedos and may still have a cable unit they no longer need, so post your need in the classifieds. Used ones go for around $16 Avg. deliv. on EBay. Spiegler (IIRC) sells quality units too.
