Tomorrow is the 5th anniversary of my first day of motorcycle ownership. It was the Friday before Memorial Day in 2008 when I rode my America off the lot at Manayunk Triumph.

It got me thinking: "I wonder how much I've spent on motorcycles and motorcycle stuff since then?" I keep pretty good track of my expenses in Quicken, and even established an expense category to track motorcycle-related spending. So I ran the report in Quicken.

Long story short: DO NOT DO THIS.If you ever get the urge to do this, let me know and I will talk you out of it. Instead, just go fire up your bike and go for a ride and remind yourself how much you love riding, and that whatever the cost, it's worth it.

That is all.

Never, ever, never keep track of these expenditures. Understand you will always spend too much on these items then learn to accept it.

Similar for car hobby. The main thing to consider is that unlike so many other pastimes; if you decide to get out of it, you can recoup a pretty good chunk when you sell.

Consider an avid golfer. Green/cart fees, super cool golf clubs, travel costs, etc. A golfer hangs it up, and that's that. sell the glubs- maybe, but pennies on the dollar.

Scuba (which I do) is similar. Equipment gets outdated pretty quickly. selling it isn't worth the hassles.

compared to others hobbies, I wouldn't sweat it. Especially when you can use your bike for commuting and errands and are actually saving money on fuel.

I broke my purchase down by how much I use it. My first ride cost me 100% of what I paid for the bike. The next ride cut it in half that; and so one. Heck with this logic by the time I ride it a hundred times, money should be spitting out the exhaust!

No matter how Cynical I become, I can never keep up.

Ignorance is bliss. I think I had close to the original purchase price in performance and assorted cool stuff on the 2002 Cardinal Red America.

The 2007 Speedmaster is pretty much a stock outfit, subject to change of course.

Once I spend it, I dont think about it.My bike has been the best hobby/investment I think I have made. The 73 Bug,, still good but its a higher dollar investment that you can never recover except with a grin.

I have all my receipts going back probably 30 years for what I have spent on my bikes but only to keep track of parts, never added up cost and don't want to.

Let's not even consider what we've spent on sex . It will make ALL the others hobbies pale in comparison.

I remember Charlie Sheen stating he didn't know which he spent more money on, sex or coke.

Any time I start thinking about how much money I've wasted on my toys over the years, I comfort myself by thinking how much money my friends have spent on liquor and cigarettes. I'm still coming out way ahead, both in aquisitions and health! I sometimes have to hold my tongue when a questionable friend says, and with a little negative envy in his voice, " Gee, you're got so many toys!" DUH! Cause I don't spend $100 every weekend getting wasted!

Well Chet, word is 500 bucks won't even get the hotter Vegas hookers out of the casino and to the elevator door anymore!

(...though maybe that's not what you're askin' here...and NOT that I would have any first-hand experience in these matters ANYWAY, mind you)

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

THIS is a great point. It made me think about my ex wife, and how freaking hot she was when dated and got married, and then how once we were married she started spending ALL my money and then some, and then let herself go to about 2x her original size, and then...don't even get me started on what happened to our sex life. And I'm still! paying for her. When I add up just what I've spent on alimony over the past five years, it's nearly 6x the total that I've spent on the motorcycles and accessories.

OK. I feel much much better now. Rant over. Thanks all. I'm going to go order those Hagon Nitros and Ricor Intiminators and upgrade the suspension on the America now.

While you are tormenting yaselvs, why dont ya calculate the money wasted in ya youth on such things as breaking stuff, traffic fines, fads and fashions, trying to pick up women, drugs and alcohol, then go drive nails in ya scrotums.
But you can laugh it all off by looking up all the old loves of your life and giving them a call and say, "I was in the hospital recently and .........well ya may want to go get checked out.............they dont know how long I had this. And hang up.

True.
Our other affair is boating, we've had several through the years. We bought our current boat new in 2004 with efficency in mind, single V8 engine but kept good cruise comfort, A/C, frige, galley, full head etc. Still it has an 82 gallon fuel tank and burns about 13 gallons per hour at 25 kn.

My affinity was for the kind with sails. I always found them more exciting and you can't beat the fuel costs. I found I didn't have enough time for all my toys, though. I'm building a small (10ft) sailboat just to play around with.

I've had the classic "happiest day of my life" more than once. You'd think I'd learn .

Now, I'm just debating whether to buy a 5hp gas or Minn Kota electric motor for my old Gheenoe - though a sail kit would be sweet too.

If gas goes much higher, a lot of us are gonna start feeling the pain. Unfortunately, most the toys I have all use gas, which is gonna be painful. At what point does the fun stop and the pain begin? Sure gonna hate to find out.

Very true.

I've found that if you use it once a month or less, renting may be best. Once very 2-3 months or less, renting IS best.

No storage, maintenance, tag, insurance, cleaning, tires, ageing/depreciation, etc.

All I know is that when I pick it up, it better start, and when I return it, it needs a full tank of fuel (as it was when I picked it up).

MOST rentals are late models with low mileage, and very well serviced. Most likely JUST serviced prior to me picking it up.

Only negative I know is you can't "Personalize" it. BUT is that REALLY a negative, considering the monies saved???

I've rented motorcycles at a rate of 3-4 times a year when I'm in the mood to experience another bike, and I'm NOT talkin' about a demonstration ride of 1-10 miles, I'm talkin' about and average of 300-400 mile a day trial, such as the 2,500 miles on that Sportster rental we had for our vacation that included the GA. Rally. All three of us got a few hundred miles on that one rental. And every time I get a different model, color, and accessories, to fit my mood of the day.

I've experienced more brands, models, and accessories than most anyone I know.

Though I usually rent Harley's, Hondas, BMW, Triumph, and M.G. are always available, with others available at times).
