classed as a "fast bomber" and known as the flying pencil due to its slim fuselage.

Thanks, I love old airplanes as much as old motorcycles and cars.

Thanks also...
I've always appreciated the history around older planes, especially the "not so familiar" ones such as the Dornier. Aircraft museums are some of my favorite places to visit.

I got to crawl around in a working B-24 recently. It looked very similar.

When I was station in P-cola I used to love going down to the museum. I always felt it rivaled the Smithsonian.

As a former military aviator and plane nut, this is an awesome find. Great article.

Yeah, the Dornier is definitely sportier but the B-24 actually had space for bombs.

As you guys probably know, many military historians have stated that one of Nazi Germany's major strategic mistakes was their failure to build a fleet of heavy bombers such as did the Allied forces. (...then again of course, their "Operation Barbarossa" and creating a two-front war for themselves to fight wasn't exactly a "brilliant move" EITHER...uh huh, ain't it funny how dumb a "Master Race" can be sometimes?!)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Now that's an interesting story. My Uncle Howard was co-pilot 0n a B 26 Marauder out of England. I think he flew on 60+ missions. He was a hero to me He also provided me with Special Exports at a cousin's wedding reception in the late 60's, which only made him more legendary in my eyes . I liked to remind my mother how her brother taught me how to drink beer. jh

How about some British classics. The local Military Aviation Museum in Virginia Beach started flying their newest project a de Havilland Mosquito! goes well with their fully restored Spitfire And Hurricane Unlike many museums the aircraft here are restored to flying condition. Thanks for the beautiful aircraft photos. Is it just me or do others seeing a Spitfire fighter think classic Brit sportscars in general?

Friday all of the fighters were out of the hangers in the sun. The Spitfire was on the end of the flightline so I got a picture with my bike. They will all be flying this weekend.

That first photo would have been the perfect soft porn shot, except that guy wearing the khaki shorts and blue shirt should have been a college girl in a bikini. Seriously, great photos thanks.

The Mosquito is largely forgotten these days, but it was really something during the war. For a time, it was the fastest fighter in the RAF, even though it was intended to be a light bomber. Some versions had no guns to allow a bigger bomb load. The idea was that guns weren't needed because the axis had nothing that could catch it. It was made of wood to conserve materials needed for the existing fighter designs. This had a nice side effect in being the first 'stealth' airplane. The Germans didn't have the magnetron, so their radar worked on a longer wavelength, making the twin Merlins nearly invisible and completely missing the wood airframe.
This all reminds me of a time when I was walking home from school and heard a low whistling hum. I looked up and saw a flight of P38's from the nearby airbase practicing low formation flying.
