Yep, Sturgis South Dakota. Never been, this is the year. Bucket list thing. Wife is very excited and insists we ride there and back (1800 miles each way). Meeting her sister and husband from Wyoming there.

Anybody from around here been to the rally before? We're booked at Glencoe campground. Looks like fun.

Never been, but like you it's on my bucket list. It will probably be years before I'm able to attend though. Hope you have a great time, and good weather!

I rode out in 2011. From balto to there and back. Loved every minute of it. I never trailer my bike. Nothing worse than seeing folks from a few 100 miles away and trailer their HD in. IMNSHO. Take plenty of time. See Custer state park, spearfish canyon, becareful of the buffalo. Devils tower is also an amazing ride. And of course the bad lands. Have a great time. I would have gone this year but i couldn't find anyone to buddy up on a room....i don't do the tent thing.

I had a blast when I went, even with all the people that have no idea how to take a turn in the road... There are some great roads to ride there if you can get on them without a crowd

Thanks for the recommendations. We're staying in a nice RV her sister is bringing from Wyoming, the toy hauler type. I can't give them hell about trailering their Harley Softail if I get to stay in their trailer! We'll be bringing our tent and 2 weeks worth of gear on our bikes but I'll bet after riding all day we'll get rooms on the way out and back.

I always go out there during the last week of September. You have the whole dang place to yourself and the colors are turning. The trout fishing is really good too. But I do plan on heading out there during the rally one of these years. The Iron Mt. Road, Needles Hwy, Devils Tower, Custer wildlife loop and Spearfish Canyon are all "must do" rides. Have a great ride out. But a word of warning. If you head through SD on I-90 right after a major weather front, the cross winds can be BRUTAL. I've seen a couple of bikes that were literally blown off the road.

plus 1 on the needles hwy, awesome ride. Spearfish is a great ride too. Crazy horse is more impressive than Mt Rushmore.

The weather out there is wildly unpredictable in the summer. it will be too hot, it will be cold and it will rain, and every other day there is a chance of tornado.

AmyLee and I stayed in a camp ground outside Hill City in '09, we rode to most of the above locations plus Wall Drug which is kind of interesting. When your borderline senior citizen I believe there is nothing wrong with toy-haulers, its called pacing your self and having energy at your destination.

The big weekend is the first weekend, so do yourself a favor and show up 3 or 4 days early so you can see all the sights, with minimal traffic. Sturgis will be all setup the week before the rally starts so you can check everything out without the crowds. Hangout for the first weekend and then leave. Once the rally starts driving around to see all the great sights will be much harder and frustrating.

There was a good article in this months (March '13) rider magazine about Sturgis.

I really appreciate all the recommendations and warnings. I'm researching each area/route suggested and developing a plan, the area looks beautiful.

Weather is another factor, have seen Sturgis video of sudden strong storms, hail and tornadoes. And of course occasional herds of buffalo blocking the road.

Looks like a great ride!

I am hoping to go to the Sturgis rally next year. A bucket list item as well.
I did stop there during the rally once while my band was on tour. Stayed for a couple of hours took a lot of video, drank some overpriced beers.
I just want to kind of do the whole experience, goofy or not.

This will be our first time in Sturgis 2013. We will be going for the week before...everything is booked so no changing dates. Hope the week before is going to be worth it and still have the same experience. ....please give me your opinions. Thanks

Sturgis 2013 is in the books.
We took 2 weeks off. Stopped in Milwaukee on the way out and stayed at the Iron Horse hotel (nice place) across the river from the Harley museum. The museum is quite interesting, very well done.

On to Sturgis, checked out the town and the new Indian's intro. Harley, Victory and Indian had very large well done displays but I didn't see Triumph. After that I really didn't care about hanging around town. During the week we rode to Deadwood, Spearfish Canyon, Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer, Iron Mountain road the Badlands and Devil's tower in Wyoming...all beautiful areas.

About 6,400 people live in Sturgis and over 500,000 arrive for the rally so most are in huge campgrounds Full Throttle, Buffalo Chip, Glencoe etc. Apparently the crazy stuff is mostly confined to the campgrounds and kept out of the town where the police are everywhere. Beautiful riding area during the day and wild parties at night.

Stopped by the Kansas City Harley plant where her Sportster was built and did some kayaking at Norris dam in Tennessee on the way back. A great trip even the weather was good. Thanks again for all the suggestions.

Awesome! Congrats! Were there any other twins there or was it "Harley-ville"?

To bad no triumph booth. I was there in 2011 and they had a big tent set up a Lazelle Ave. all the varoius models, some demo bikes, a carpenter R3 and a whole crew of very attractive gals to talk to you about the bikes. Oh, and some free triumph stuff, beer cozzies, bottle opens, etc.

Wonder they they didn't do this year as they appear to be really expanding into the cruiser market?

Saw about a dozen Triumphs while I was there, mostly Americas and T-birds.

I don't know where they were everyone else was on Lazelle. Largest motorcycle rally in the world and Triumph is a no-show.

Triumph was there. if i remember correctly they were at the west end of Lazelle near the I-90 entrance.
