Hi all, after a not so short hiatus (sorry about that!), I'm back and I miss you guys and the few gals around here. So, let me get back into it with this one. They've been putting up new speed cameras in various locations and the thing is... There's a camera watching the camera! What kind of a world do we live in, where we need cameras to keep us in check, and cameras keeping us in check and making sure we don't do anything to the cameras that keep us in check... eh??? And knowing how things are, in the room where real humans are watching the screens of the cameras watching the cameras, there is surely a camera looking at the people who are watching the cameras that are watching the cameras.... So who watches who? this could go pretty deep!

I am getting dizzy just contemplating the question. I think in Canada it is the Prime Minister he is a real control freak.

Nah, the answer DOESN'T have to "go pretty deep" here, Jeff.
Nope, 'cause in a PERFECT WORLD, the OBVIOUS answer is:

(...btw, welcome back)

Its a world that was foretold too us in a book called 1984. Runamuck money greedy government turned tyranny by its addiction like sociopathic drug addicts manipulating, lying, and by use of force and violence they rule and take from those who believe the lie and those who fear.
I have no faith in human perfectability. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active - not more happy - nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago.

They've been putting them up in our burg for a couple of months now. They gave us a grace period, but that's now officially over. On today's ride, I saw way more cameras than they announced there would be. I don't recall the specifics, but the company that installs/maintains them gets a much larger take than the city. It will be futile to fight the power.
It gives me one more thing to think about when stopping for a light - like today, when I wasn't sure whether the delivery driver behind me (who was texting when I passed him) would do the same.
According to the local news, they will only be taking still shots when the light goes to red, no video. So, the first vehicle in the intersection gets popped, subsequent vehicles get a pass.
Just more money for the politicians to waste.

I pulled up at an orange light a while ago and nearly got turned into scrap by a truck behind me who wasn't paying attention. I love the way they give us a period of "grace" [they do it here too]I must remember to doff my cap and tug my forelock next time they are gracious enough to give us a "grace"period. The term reminds me of serfs and slaves.Don't know why. Oh well, it's for our own "safety" it's not revenue raising. You understand that !?????

My wife hated people tailgating her in her van. I had a sign made to stick on the back that said CADAVER DELIVERY. She said the problem stopped.
Maybe I should hang an Igloo cooler with an ORGAN TRANSPORT sticker on it? A couple of Biohazard stickers on the side?

Big Brother is alive and well...and he's watching YOU! At some point I think people (that is to say the common blokes) will get fed up with intrusive governmental actions like stop light & surveillance cameras. Here in the states there's a media hyped monologue going on about how "the police use of drone aircraft would be in the publics' best interests"..... well, all I gotta say about that is if any drone aircraft lingers in the airspace above my home for more that a minute....well I gotta 12guage & some double aught & know how to use em!

Yeah, they'd probably just let that slide. Kinda like vandalizing police cars. They tend to be very forgiving of that kind of thing.

We'll I think we all know how "understanding" they would be about violating my civil rights now don't we? Not that I wouldn't be tempted to a little civil disobedience against unlawful search & siezure, surveilence without probable cause & such... mind you to bring the point home.....like Warren Zevon so aptly put in one of his songs......"bring lawyers, guns & money" It's the American Way!

Now John! Need you even ASK this??? I mean, you've ALL always been so fair-minded and receptive towards all to us around here, and thus OF COURSE the answer is: "Nobody HAS to!". (...actually, for the most I really mean this and salute the great work that you and ALL the moderators have done all these years...though I might add, and I'm sure you'll agree with me here, that nobody was ever better at their function of overseeing this place than was your fellow Montanan up there!)

Sure is good to see the police have the money (our money) to spend on this crap. Wasn't long ago they were announcing police and firefighter furloughs because they didn't have enough money to pay them.

How dare you be so realistic, plus remembering more than a few days into the past. I can see you will soon find ya self in a camp.

The idea behind a democratic republic is that you do at the voting booth. I know this fact eludes people because they are too worried about if the city counsel members are pro or anti what ever hot button topic you choose that they have no say over instead of their stance on things the do have control over. So what if the mayor of a city is pro or against a national or issue if they are gonna do things in that city like lay off firemen and police to put up cameras everywhere. Or short cut and take funds from the hurricane evacuation plan and use local school district money to do something else with.

Not around here. We only lay off teachers and school personnel. Apparently, the State Troopers breed like little bunnies as the 4 mile stretch of Hwy 74A (between Asheville and Lake Lure) ALWAYS has 4 Trooper Chargers parked along it all day. Sometime the county joins in the fun but they don't have unlimited resources like the Highway Patrol (and they are usually off dealing with actual crime).
We may have cut back on lots of things in NC in the down economy but there is no shortage of State Troopers.

Also kinda like the idea of having my own personal drone to follow the "official" ones around.....the citizenry watching the watchers!

My City of Fresno, CA tried Red light cameras years ago, The deal was that the supplier provided all equipment including installation and would split the revenues with the City. They had nothing but trouble with the cameras (going off at yellow and green lights, not tripping on red...obviously first gen tech). The City never collected one dime nor did the vendor in fact the vendor did not even bother to remove the cameras, they are still there for the birds to sit upon.
There is a company in the US that is making an anti-drone defense system for public purchase (I have to check my too many book marks to find it, maybe later). Obviously it is illegal to shoot the buggers down, this system scrambles the heck out of the drone electronics that either ground it or make the intended mission impossible, all data is destroyed.Chalk one up for free enterprise!
Ride like you mean it.

Sounds like just the ticket to me & just the thing to add to my home's current security & surveillance (yep, I watch too! only cause my home has been vandalized twice & there's a history of auto burglaries in my hood) system/hardware. Google....here I come....

Here in Virginia the police don't want you to know when they are watching. They get laws passed to fine you for having that kind of equipment.

No bike this time. But we did put 2000+ miles on the Winnebago including Chimney Rock Rd. (through Edneyville) and around Lake Lure. Beautiful area as always. Then it was up to Swannanoa, Black Mountain ond off to Statesville . Bearwallow looks good. I'll put it on the "must do" for next time.
We were caught off guard by the Tuesday/Wednesday snowfall in Flat Rock.

Not soon enough.
I just got back from a KLR trip to southern Arizona (HQ'd at Bisbee) so I have to let a few weeks pass before I venture out again.
As soon as I get caught up I'll post some pics of that one. It was pretty cool.
As a side note, I've had allergy and exercised induced asthma for the better part of 20 years. Took the dogs with me on the trip (trailered the KLRs) so I was up to my eyeballs in dog fur. I was somehow healed in the Arizona mountains. I've been back in Asheville for three weeks and the asthma has not returned. I'm off all my allergy/asthma meds.
How 'bout dat?
