Anyone try to shorten the America bars? I was thinking about cutting off about 1/2 inch of the ends of them, would bring the controls in a bit and pretty much to the edge of the first bend in the bars. I was not sure about the inside of the ends though and how cutting this off would effect the bars if at all, i have aftermarket grips so...?

As long as you seal the end where you expose the bare steel it's no problem, and even then that's only to ward off rust. A hose clamp makes a nifty blade guide for hacksawing pipe...

I did it a few years ago Mike, and the only thing you have to watch out for is to make sure you cut on either side of where those little plugs sit inside the handlebars that the stock bar-ends screw into, and which of course if you cut on the inside those little plugs and towards the middle of the handlebars, you won't be able to use the stock bar-ends anymore.
(...but seein' as how you said you already have aftermarket grips on your bike, this probably won't matter anyway)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

thanks Dwight, ya i don't care its an extra set of bars i bought to try a couple things with, thought was to cut the ends off, this will push the full control assembly right up to the first bend in the bar, then powder coat them black, not sure if the 1/2 inch on each side is going to make a ton of difference but should make it better if thats my alternative to the oem speedy bars

That's why I did it too, Mike. I think I actually took about an inch off the ends, and mainly due to trying to bring my hands a little more in on these fairly wide stock bars.

Exactly the reason I put Speedmaster bars on mine. I felt like I was holding a tiller with the stock bars.

Or you could do like I did and buy some custom bars that are just slightly narrower. Of course this is an old picture but you get the point. [image] [/image]
