That starting issue I had was the sprag clutch and long story short the case was cracked and I missed it the first time. So I'm looking at complete engines because of time and miles on this one...... I think any way How much does it suck to replace the lower case? I think I already know but anyone done it?

I would just get a new used motor from pinwall, they usually list them for about 1200 bucks I think

If you get an engine from the breakers on line, make sure the front motor mount lug isn't broken off from a collision or you will be looking for a friend with a Heli-Arc and the skills to fix it.

You cannot simply order the lower case. I'm pretty sure they are a matched set. Main bearing fit and all.
Can you post a picture of the cracked case. One of the fellows was able to repair his.

Na I can get the whole crank case but doesn't sound worth doing. Ill get a picture upsoon. Its basically missing the top half of the cylinder shaped idler gears shaft hole. The only fix I've seen so far is someone machined a aluminum block to accept the shaft and bolted it inside. But if Theres another way id be pumped not to drop 1500 bucks! And not to mention use the 500$ worth of starting components I just put in!

Tig weld it up.
Chad might have something here. Bring the case to a good aluminum welder and see what the options might be. It's not like the hole for the starter idler has to be perfect.
What year of bike do you have? There was extended warranty given to a few fellows here who had this problem. Doesn't hurt to take a couple of pics and send them to Triumph for "Good Will Warranty" consideration. Worked before.

Jeremy, I found the "POST" and repair MaxKirby used to fix his failed idler gear case bore. He fitted a 15/64 pin into the hollow idler gear and drilled both case bores to accept. Read the link and note the pictures provided in the photobucket link. http://s751.photobucket.com/albums/xx151/maxkirby/Triumph%20spindle%20fix/

I think it is a potential problem on any of the bikes before they changed the case design.

FYI, my fix seems to have held up well, have added anoth 15k miles to the bike since the fix. I had the cover off for the first time since then lastweekend and all looks good, no wear etc. Sure beats a new engine and everything that goes with that.
