I need to break down and get a rain suit. I road through Alabama last April and enjoyed a raging thunderstorm through what seemed like the entire state, SW to NE. I hope to make the same trip in a few weeks. Any recommendations appreciated.
And for my requisite stupid question: Are they sized to fit over proper riding jackets?

I got the FrogToggs Road Toad MC rainsuit for my trip out west this spring. They run around $80.00 & feature stirrups on the pant, reflective pipeing details, oversized stom flaps over the zips, a hood that rolls into the collar of the jacket & are ultralight. A yest they are sized to fit over riding jackets & pants. Also, I advise tou score the Smokin Toad Heat resistant patch kit to protect the pant legs where they might come into contact with the exhaust. (for me that was the lower front & sides of the calf areas just at the top of my riding boots. & I had to get 2 kits). I already had a FrogToggs rain suit in my backpacking gear that worked great at staying dry while riding. But the pant legs tended to ride up my boot when traveling @ hwy speeds.

I got nothing against a good, quality rainsuit. Trouble is, I rarely need them and I'm cheap. I go to Wally world and buy a $20 cheapo, all purpose rain suit with pants. Never had any trouble with one. They come with elastic bands around the sleeves and pant cuffs. They keep all the rain out and actually last 3 or 4 years if worn occasionally.

I had a Wally World raid suit. It shredded about an hour into Alabama. The duration of the trip being what it was, I told myself to save my money on the cheap ****** next time. I was cold and wet too long for the expense to be defensible. Sour puss that I am.

Huh. That's weird. I rode my last one clear to Florida and back, and a couple of other states later in the year. I wonder if they carry more than one quality? My first one I ruined with an oil drip from my old Trumpet, which I didn't notice until riding a thousand miles or so. The bottom 10 inches of my pants cuff disintegrated the next day!

Here's what I own. Tourmaster Along with the matching pants. Great stuff that will last for years. After two sets of elcheapo's and lots of wet shat I broke down and spent some money for a quality product. Don't always have it with me just cause i aint packing for a week long tour on every ride. But when I needed it and had it with me it was well worth every nickel spent.

+1 on the frogg togs. The only suit I've found that doesn't get me soaked from sweat after a few minutes - all the plastic ones do no matter whether expensive or cheap.

Yup, That's what sold me on em too. The FroggTogg suit I got for hiking/backing many moons ago has kept me both warm & dry through more than one Missouri/Arkansas torrential downpour while way out in the sticks! I figger'd the suit I got for my epic road trip would be just the ticket!
