Looks like the SPRAG CLUTCH in the starter drive gear mechanism is slipping. The Sprag is a one way clutch that locks up one way and slips the other. It's what allows the starter gear train to remain permanently engaged to the crank without the need of a bendix starter drive. It's the housing attached to the gear which sits between the clutch drum gear (ring gear on most other engines) and idler gear that you had your boot against. Not sure if it is serviceable. BTW, make sure you check the case bushing on that small idler gear and install the wave washer when you reassemble. The case has been known to split on the idler gear support. I think Grzegoz also had this problem in this POSTOh, one other thing, a low battery has been known to cause the sprag to slip on some of the other fellows rides. Don't really know why???

It's because a low battery causes the sprag clutch to not fully engage the sprongs or "dogs" into their corresponding slots, and thus wears the tips of those sprongs down prematurely.
(...I've had a '95 Sprint sittin' in my garage with this same problem for over 5 years now, and because of where the starter and sprag clutch assembly sits inside the engine cases in the first generation or "T300" series Hinckley Triumph Triples and Fours, thus making it necessary to remove the engine from the frame and split the engine cases to get to it, my Sprint has sat in corner of my garage waiting for me to tackle this project...this sprag clutch issue was a common problem with the early Hinckley Triumphs, and thus a warning was issued back in the day to keep the battery charged up on these bikes, which unfortunately I only heard of after I had tried to start my Sprint too many times with a low battery charge)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)
