I am considering wrapping my header pipes. Not to look cool or any performance (imagined or otherwise) gains. This will be in addition to replacing the current modified TOR mufflers. The surface of my header pipes are deteriorating from several factors I'm sure. I had a very lean running condition for longer than expected. Waited a long time before removing the SAI. Live close to the Gulf of Mexico. Rain happens, “cleaning” afterwards does not. The m/c was purchased to use for transportation and gets used as a daily driver for work, errands, groceries & such. Parked under a car cover, not garage kept. The headers are not so much bad as rough. This may cover up some previously shinny stuff and cover some crappy stuff at the same time. OK then, for some sage advice. Several sites state 50 ft will wrap both Bonneville headers, what about our double walled header pipes? Don't really want to go through the extra effort to cut the outer wall away. Will 25 ft each be enough? Can I do it with the pipes on place? Should I go through the effort of removing the headers and wrapping them off the bike? Use the kit included or other wise fancy SS tie wrap thingies or parts store hose clamps for securing the wrap? Wrap from bottom of the header pipe up to the cylinder? Thanks folks for any help.

1. I got my wrap here: http://www.british-customs.com/header-exhaust-wrap.html2. I wrapped the outer wall of the double wall pipe. 3. I would remove the pipes, it was easier to wrap them. 4. I started from the head end. 5. I used SS hose clamps on mine 5. Soak the wrap in water. 6. I let them dry for 24 hours and went over them with bar-b-que paint to seal them up (read that some where). 6. In about year and a half I repainted them again, they were starting to fade

Yes, 50' should be way more than enough. I did mine five years ago, on the bike, from top of header (at cyl.) to muffler. I did use SS ties, but I was also interested in looks. Every couple of years I re-spray the wrap with the silicon wrap spray, to turn them solid black again. (White spots creep in, just like in the hair on my head). Just follow the directions, and soak the wrap in water before applying.

Thanks guys. Good information. I will likely get the stuff from BC as I'm looking at going to there Cocktail Shakers. Didn't really want to take the headers off but does look like it will be easier to wrap um if I do.

I don't think so.
I didn't have ANY difficulty putting the wrap on while the pipes were on the bike. The job only took an hour, IF that.
I can't imagine even getting the pipes on and off in anywhere near that time frame, much less wrapping them, even IF all goes as planned, and no studs/nuts get busted/trashed at the head.
Add in new gaskets.

I would rather leave them on. The gaskets are like $10 but the header bolts & studs are another issue waiting to happen Not sure the time & effort are worth it, then again I'm pretty sure it's not! Now, to wait for the government to give me my money back. Then I can do the right thing and recirculate it purchasing new pipes & header wrap

I think that if the header wrap on the bike doesn't work out, then he gets a Chevy Silverado with busted 4 wheel drive. Looked pretty obvious to me!

OK guys, header wrap should be here in days. Mufflers may be ordered in a day or two. Now, erle & SDKimo, you both wrapped your headers from the top to the bottom. Was there a reason or was it just the way it seemed easiest? I would think water would shed better if the lip of of the wrap was to the bottom of the wrap. Like wrapping from the bottom to the top which was my plan. That is unless there is good reason to go from the top down. Lord knows I've been wrong plenty of times

I really don't know why I started from the top...but the overlap is points down so water from above would shed off the pipe and down...but water coming up from the road would be hitting the overlap...if any of that make sense.

It is my understanding that you should always wrap from the bottom up. You want to cover the top overlap.

Yes start at the back of the pipe and work your way to the head. I know they will be off and on a work bench but thats the idea. So they dont scoop water and road filth.

This isn't like roof underlayment, or horizontal siding, it's "Header Wrap". It's FABRIC. Shedding water, and road grim will NOT be any different, regardless of which way you lap the stuff. It's tighter than a ducks a$$ when it comes to water/debris, except for the fact that it absorbs water like a sponge. I've only had mine for about five years now, but there's been no issues with water intrusion, road grim, or rotting/rusted pipes.

Wrap has been here for a couple of days & the mufflers just showed up. Went from rainy to a bit brisk, mid 30's here this morning. May be a couple more days before this project gets started. Also need to fab up some type of muffler hangers. Plan to wrap the headers from the bottom up. Looking at things now I see I will be covering up the weep holes on the bottom of the header pipes just ahead of the muffler joint. Guess it won't really matter if I cover the outer wall gaps around the crossover pipe & O2 bungs. Don't want to cut the outer wall off. Really shouldn't get water between the header walls I hope if wrapped well.

I dont have tv. Its what they tell ya in the paper work that comes with motorcycle header wrap. Wrap past the crossover as neatly as possible, or cut and plug.

I have thought about it. Header mounting bracket & crossover right there together. Figured it's like lots of things in life, deal with it when you get to it I would like to actually start on the muffler and cover the clamp also since I no longer have the heat shields to hide them. Of course, if I need to remove the mufflers later I have a problem Decisions, decisions...

Thanks for the picture. Have searched & looked at several wrappings but most are on v-twins. The few found of America's did not show anywhere close to the header / muffle joint.

OK, got busy with the wrap today. Had gotten a 50' roll of graphite black wrap & an 8 pack of 8” stainless locking ties. Unrolled it, cut it in half and dropped all of it in a bucket of water. Went & checked the mailbox, ugh only bills. Poured out the dark water and rinsed the wrap again, and again, and again... Started on the bottom flat section of the header just in front of the crossover pipe. The 8” ties are just long enough, wish they were 2mm longer! Here's what I wound up with. Went for a ride to dry/cure the wrap. Did not have any smoke or smell at first. After a short warm up I hit the road. Started to smell the wrap after ~5 mins. Noticeable after 10 mins. Stopped for a phone call and did see some smoke rising from the wrap. Quit soon after and never saw any more. Still has a slight smell but not bad & seems to be fading fast. Chuck if you wrap yours DO wear gloves & long sleeves, DO wear eye protection and take your time.

The wrap manufacturer sells a silicon sealer spray, in colors to match, for initial installation and for color touch ups every year or two. (or whatever) IMHO, required.

Well the decorative British flag bolts I used to block off the O2 bungs were a bad idea. The header wrap was beginning to tear at the tall bolt heads. After getting home from the AMA Superbike races at Barber last week I unwrapped the pipes. *Got to take a couple of laps around the track, had a BLAST!!! Wasn't sure if I was just going to re-wrap or paint the header pipes. Found that the bolts were no longer tight. Couldn't get them out intact. Took the headers off. After a bit of work I was able to get old parts out & good low profile & short bolts in place. Decided to paint the headers. Wire wheel on the drill, sand paper, scotch brite pad and some VHT / ceramic silicate(?) type paint and I had black header pipes. Had fallen victim to the Rinehart mufflers threads. Fabbed up some brackets. Got it all together yesterday and had a good shake down ride today. Here is a chezzy sound clip. OK, know to leave things alone for a while. Then on to suspension

Yep me again. In the two photo's here, one shows bags on the other off. I have supports the same shape as yours. How do the bags afix to them? A couple of pics would be cool. Cheers.

They have a pair of velcro straps on the back side. They secure the bags to the supports pretty well & are easy to undo for removal and/or cleaning. I'll see if I can get a couple of pics after work today. edit to add pics for Cloudy Here they are in place, And here they are loose,

How is the paint holding up on the wrap? Did it soak into the wrap, coat the wrap, or both?

It sort of 'browns out' after 7-8 months. Then you just respray. I think I would do this even if I had a new exhaust. Oh, BTW, when you take off the exhaust to wrap/paint, it's a great opportunity to block off the crossover tube w/a freeze plug. It makes the exhaust sound a deeper tone, not really louder. (the 16" shorties take care of that) You can find the specs on the freeze plug (less than a dollar, BTW) in the Tech Vault.
