A close relative of mine has a wife who is a pain in the neck. One of her weird habits has to do with "new" car purchases. Anybody who gets a new car in her family (husband, daughter, son) has to first let her drive the first few thousand miles or so, or she throws a fit. (Honestly, I'm not making this up) His sons and daughter are thinking about buying him a new car for his birthday, but they are loath to the idea of his wife grabbing it and driving all the new off of it. (This family's dynamics are too strange to relate here.) A couple of his kids and I were talking about this problem, and I said there ought to be some kind of electronic device that can be attached to the car which would only allow him to drive it. And something like a special key or a coded keypad won't do it, he'd just buckle under her pressure to give it to her. Anybody on here ever hear of a system which would only allow a single adult to drive a particular car?

Nope, Rich. I don't think there's been any system designed as of yet which can give somebody a backbone.

(...ummm...I MEAN which gives 'em sole access to their own vehicle...sorry)

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

We'll go low tech on this one: Make it a stickshift, then break her right arm or left leg!

I'd be damned if I go and buy a car and then someone else tells me they get to drive the first couple thousand miles on it

I'm tellin ya, this has gone on for years. He bought his son (her stepson) a new car, she drove it for the first two or three weeks, their daughter next, same thing, he gets a new ride, he doesn's see it for a few thousand miles. I could tell you way more bat'ier stories. Should write a book. I thought maybe a pressure sensitive switch hooked to the seat, calibrated to his weight. Palm sensitive screen you had to push on every so many miles. Heck, I don't know. That's why I'm asking YOU guys. Can't believe somebody hasn't invented something.

Put in one of those breathalizer devices and slip a little vodka in her morning juice she won't get out of the driveway.

I think this woman's problem can be attributed to "Ioweejuns" disease, ie, too much pork and corn in the diet.

Time for an off-site garage. Keep the car in one of those storage units for the first month or two. He can drive his beater to the unit and pick up his new car, then drop it off at night and drive home in the beater. After a couple of months, the kids can "surprise" him with a new - used car.

And they'll have a good story to tell the grandkids after mom has been committed.

I rented a storage unit last year and met a guy that kept his NSX and Hayabusa in one. Told me it was safer than his condo parking lot. A couple hundred a month and 24 hour access.

I wonder what it would cost to get a thumbprint scanner installed. But then, she might cut off his thumb...

That being the case, he might prefer the thumb over Bigbills suggestion...

OR jam the seat so it won't pull forward (this only works if there is enough of a height difference). I figure it may be more humane than arm/leg breaking suggestion.

I don't get this. Even with a foolproof 'Jezebel inhibitor' installed in the car this "excuse-for-a-man" is still going to live with her. She's going to be the spawn of satan or worse in the home. Get a lawyer.

I think this had been considered in years past, a couple of times. Then, coincidentally, guess who gets pregnant? (And how do ya think she "caught" him in the first place? And admitted she was going to, to his sister, no less!)

Sounds Appalachian to me. Break her of it by purchasing a new car for HER and then not letting HER drive it for the first few thousand miles or so.

Keeps getting pregnant? Norplant implants. And being as the husband is usually one half of the equation, and assuming he is of average intelligence, a paternity test might be in order too. Really, where does she go on her new car joy rides? Do these rug rats appear nine months or so after someone get's a new cage?

Trust me, her whole FAMILY could be a reality TV show. I've got a whole trunk of crazy stories about her and her nutter siblings I like to share around a campfire.

Rich, I hope you don't mind that we're having a bit of fun with this. I think we could all tell some wild tales about our own families. I know I can (well I can with the wife's family anyway ). Pity we can't pick the ones we want.

Absolutely no problem. I'm just glad I don't have to deal with them very much.
