I ride my bike everyday to work, rain, snow, hail and the occasional day of sun shine. Unfortunately this last week was very wet and my chain is rusty. I have a scott oiler and the "internals" of the chain are fine, just the outside. How can I get the rust off and what do people use to keep them in good condition? I have used waxy stuff but thats not good when using the scott oiler. Thanks all,
Jon

IMO, the only answer is to take that antiquated oil can off and use the wax.

Jon,
Surface rust is easily removed using a rag dampened with any clean oil. Preferably the same oil in the scott oiler. Use kerosine if you feel the need to clean. Lift rear wheel of the ground, dab your rag in the oil and while using your left hand to spin the rear wheel, hold the chain with the oil laden rag. When ya are dun, wipe as much oil off as you can...If the rust is more than surface rust, say hello to a siena colored chain!

I'll take my "antiquated Oilcan", acutally, that's my "antiquated Scottish Oilcan" you brigand and a smidge of rust over having to wax or oil my chain every 500 miles!! Less time waxing=more time riding!

What's up Greg? I didn't realize it freezes over in South Carolina? Haven't heard from you in a while! Speaking of lubing chains, I lubed mine last night after a ride to supper. Took 5 minutes. The only pain is when you don't have a lift. Then I have to do the side stand cake walk...Lifting the bike gets an eyeball or two on the wheels too.
Now, when all you Scottish oil can antiquarians get the big bore with the amals, oh well, no vacuum nipples for you!

Every 500 miles, keresone and a grunge brush. I like the concept of the Scott Oiler, but I know I'd get lazy with the cleaning. It's all perspective, cleaning/oiling is a Zen thing with a pint of Guinness making the job a joy. ohhhhhmmmm.

I have some specialist chain cleaner and lube. I MUST get round to doing a proper job of cleaning and re-lubing before the weekend.
I use the wax stuff and it seems great - not too much though or it'll 'fling' off.
The money a Scottoiler costs paid for a bike lift and, in theory, it's better because the Scottoiler can tend to be 'fit and forget'. Normal cleaning and lubing at least makes you look and check the chain - I must start it one day ... !

Hey Moe, when I make it to the big time and move to Colorado and have a real garage, then maybe I'll drag out the bike lift every week or so to check the chain, but as it is, now I have to haul it out of my shed at the other end of the yard (and it ain't LIGHT!!!) over to where my bike is. But no worries, I still get down and look over the wheels and chain every weekend when I give her a bath, or when I adjust the chain. I'll keep my oiler thank you very much though since it keeps my bike much cleaner than when I used a spray can (now tell me how having a system AUTOMATICALLY oil your chain is more antiquated than doing it by hand Dr. Spock, that does not compute!!!) Put that in yer pipe and smoke it!! And I don't need a big bore to compensate for any lack in other areas!!! See you in Georgia, rusty chain and all!!

"Dr. Spock" was a baby doctor, and writer. "Mr. Spock", played by Leonard Nemoy, was the 2nd Officer on the starship "Enterprise" on Star Trek. Live long and prosper! Charlie

LOL. I would like to have a Scott Oiler. Fill it and furget about it. One day. Maybe after I install my 440's or the custom rear peg hangers or the floating rotor or the fork springs... Too many goodies, too little time.
