Please follow the link below to sign the White House petition to exempt military retirees from having to pay federal income tax on their military retirement earnings. Not only would this be an appropriate way to say, "Thanks for putting up with all that BS while you were in for those many years defending our freedom to sign petitions," but I could also frankly use the extra money for car farkles*. Thanks in advance! Linky here: https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/pet...ation/Qqvn71pC*Farkle: N: An Accessory intended to improve or embellish the original system; opulent luxury item; V: to add pleasure or comfort; to strut about after adding additional items to stock unit thus improving value or performance, usually saying "whoo-hoo" loudly to yourself or your neighbors.

JC....went to the link and could not find the petition. Your reference to Farkles reminded me of an SNL skit long ago about Fred and Freida Farkle and their beautiful daughter Sparkle Farkle.

Wade will support you just because of your artful use of the asterisk . He's. a sucker for a cute asterisk. My vote would be meaningless (not being a US citizen) but you have my moral support.

I am not afraid to say I absolutely will not sign such a thing. The military are not more equal than any other American. How bout the nurse, teacher, fireman, police officer? They don't count as much as you?
You were not drafted, you applied for the job. Pay your taxes like everybody else and thank you, for your service. You are welcome for the pay, medical, GI Bill, and retirement benefits your nation bestowed upon you for that service.

Ahemmm...
First, if you don't want to sign the petition, then don't. I respect that, but you have no idea if I was originally drafted or not when I started in the military, do ya?
Second, if you feel that nurses, policemen. firefighters, garbage collectors, or anyone else deserves as much of a break on their federal taxes as military retirees, then start another petition, and I'll sign that one too. Why do you presume that because I support this petition, that I feel I'm any "better" than these other folks or wouldn't support an effort on their behalf to afford more farkles? Besides, nurses, police, firefighters, and teachers are all occupational specialties within the military, so these folks WOULD be included. Additionally, there are scores of people in these same occupations as civilians who serve in the national guard and reserves, so they would be included as well when they retired. This means that I didn't exclude them, YOU did.
Third, signing a WH petition does nothing more than elicit a response from the appropriate office in the administration once the requisite number of signatures is acquired within the 30 day period. Most of the replies I've read have been in the order of "Thanks for the suggestion, but we won't be doing anything on this." or "The administration does not support blowing up other planets."
Fourth, I'm not only proud to have served my country in uniform long enough to have retired, I am grateful for the chance and good health to have been able to do it. If you think I feel I'm "better" than anyone else for having done it, then you obviously don't know me at all.
Fifth, while I wouldn't mind a tax break on my retirement or any other income if I could get it, why is this a bad thing? Do you not claim every deduction and credit you can get on your own taxes? Does your crafty use of the Earned Income Credit mean you are better than those (like me) who have no idea WTF that is?
Sixth, I posted the petition more as a tongue in cheek thing, and this is pretty apparent if you notice my "masterful use of the asterisk.* and the farkle reference" Heck, even the link I added was a dead end.
Seventh, You are a big poopyhead if you don't sign the BS petition or start one for the nurses, dog catchers, police, and firefighters.

OK, I'm a vet. About half my family is retired military. Been there, done that. I was injured (minor stuff) and found to be NPQ (not physically qualified) to continue flying. Didn't get any benefits other than the usual "thanks for playing our game" stuff. I will say that my siblings who were able to retire from the military got really, really SWEET retirement bennies at a young (relatively) age. Good for them.
Don't care much one way or another about the petition. I know my own family members were fine financially during their service time because, as was pointed out, they didn't have to pay for many of the 'routine' family expenses most folks face. Paychecks can stretch pretty far if you're not paying for housing, meals, insurance, health care, dental care, etc.
If I was picking a group that deserved the biggest tax break it would be teachers. Those folks do more for our country and get less for their efforts than anyone else I've ever met and they are always the first to get screwed whenever cuts 'need' to be made.

I don't agree with it and this is a discussion forum. That is where discussion happens. If you choose not to support the military or the nation by not funding them with your tax dollars that is your call not mine. If you find it amusing then you agree with me.
I was the last year of the draft, When I was 22 everything done in the area of re-enlistment, career and retirement would have not a single thing to do with the draft. I stand corrected you may have been drafted but not for two decades.
Your voluntary servitude earned you your tax payer supported pension. It would appear if you favor that petition you don't think our troops today deserve your contribution. I hope I am wrong.

Taxes pay for the defense budget. If you don't pay taxes you are not paying for the taxpayer funding of the military.
To me it was pretty simple. Taxpayers pay for defense. Taxpayers pay yours and my pensions.

You DO realize this would only exempt military retirement and not any other income received, do you not? You also know that it would have a snowball's chance on a sunny summer day in Arizona of being approved, don't you?
Questions:
Would you support or not support a similar exemption of federal tax on social security payments?
Also, do you claim as many exemptions and deductions as you legally can on your return, or do you just base what you send in on the tax tables for your gross income and send it in?

Yes. As a three time IRS auditee, those government agents scare me.
I'm for eliminating ALL deductions - personal and corporate. Then we'll have a level playing field.

Of course I realize it on the retirement checks. That is income. Of course you take deductions. That is social engineering via IRS. Everybody who has income should be taxed. I agree with Hermit that it should be a flat tax where everybody pays the same percentage with no deductions. Question: Do you believe that the defense budget should be cut by the amount not paid by retired military or should those whose money you live on pay more taxes to make up that shortfall? They would also have to pay more taxes projected to the future for those about to retire that would no longer be contributing to the tax base. But this discussion could last forever about taxes so I will drop from it now **..**`~ I am sure they mean something

I got audited a few years ago, and they found out that I had overpaid by a couple hundred dollars + change. They never returned...
