Decided to get the winter project under way. I removed the rear fender, blocked it up and clamped it down. I verified it was level based on the top 2 screw holes from the tail light. Maybe not the best way, but it seems to work.

Looking for suggestions...
I ran string from the bolt on the side to the center hole on the license frame to get somewhat symmetric lines, leveled a line across, and finished with a line down below the side bolts...

thoughts on this being symmetric prior to cutting?

Seems good to me.

I actually just free handed mine. (NOT the best method )

BUT, whatever you do, do NOT throw away the cut off piece.

I used mine to extend my rear fender on the other end (used a brass plate with a Triumph emblem epoxied on to fill the indentation where the tail light was). With the air box removed, road grime was thrown all over the top side of my swing arm on wet roads. Keeping my lady (see pic) wet and dirty.

I was also going to use the left over as an Air Dam on the lower front down tubes. (more like a skid plate)

So, IF you don't want it, and NOBODY ELSE wants it, I'll take it for shipping IF your throwing it away. (UNLESS you live outside the continental USA)

Peace.

What you got going should work fine, I used the center of the rear axle, both sides and used a makeshift string compass for laying out the sides and worked from level or plumb for the end cut. On the corners, I traced the one side I had radius ed to my liking and copied it over the the other side. I also developed my layout on tape rather than the paint and cut just aside the line, then brought the cut in the rest of the way with a sharp mill file. The only touch up painting I had to do was the kerf of the final cut, the exterior paint was unmarred. Of course if you are going to repaint anyway, you don't have to take all the extra care, I did. Tape does provide a more visible line for your cut though, at least on a black fender.

Lordy Erle, lots of nice details, query on the the pre airbox filters. Are those the centered or offset ones? And have you found a source for K&N type elements that fit or are you using the paper filters? BTW, Aren't you worried some tweeker will be after your bike with all that Brass and copper?

erle, good info, I plan on keeping the extra bits in case the mood strikes and i get crafty.
I have a rear mud guard installed that also doubles as a battery holder. It came with the freak kit, even though I dont use the side brackets.

Ryk-
I taped up the lines. basically tape on either side of where I want to cut then one piece over where Im cutting so there is a visible line beneath the tape.

I guess I will just use my dremel and a cutting wheel. Its probably my easiest tool to control and a cutting wheel seems better than a metal blade.

I'll post pics when its done.
Now to order some touch up paint for the bare edges.

Hey Ryk, they are the off-set ones (pair for $45.00).

Yes, I found the K&N's, but I ain't payin' $50-90 for them. (This ain't no 'Busa)

I AM that tweeker.

I used a chalk line for the two side straight cuts and used the cut off bottom of the fender as a tempelet for the curve and it worked fine,

Ok, so it's pretty much done...

I used the dremel and the Fiber Reinforced Cutting Wheels, they slice right through the fender.
I did one pass, light but deep enough to hold the wheel for future passes. Then once i was comfortable I cut her off.
Cleaned the edges up with a flat file.
The paint wanst even damaged after the cut or filing, however, I taped it up and hit it with a thin line of spray white plus primer to seal it up.
I'll get some touch up paint this week while Im searching for new tail lights and the proper way to mount the plate.

Taped it up...

Cutting...

Pretty much done...

Primer on the bare edge...

advice on plate mounting...

I have the lay-down plate mount from Zmillin, and I'm thinking this. I have some S/S round stock that i could mount to the rear fender behind the luggage rack. I'd cut the bottom so that the stock would angled back a little, then run a bolt through the round stock down through the fender for mounting. Then I could mount the plate frame to the round stock...

Or, does anyone know where I could just get some mounting brackets? I guess i could mill what I needed.. :-/

What tail light have you decided on? Your fender looks pretty good unencumbered, have you considered a low axle mount?

Hey Ryan,

IF your gonna use this fender full time, a fender mounted plate would be ok.

BUT, being I'm VERY anal retentive , I'd have to buy a dozen tag mounts, one for every "Fender of the day", and I'd be screwed on Commando Day, days I run with no fender at all.

As the pic's will illustrate, an axle mount plate eliminates the problem and expense of buying several mounts. (AND serves as my chain/sprocket guard.)

(I GUESS if I was really concerned about the money though, I'd leave the damn thing alone! )

Ryk-

I was thinking of getting a license plate frame with a built in light and using turn signals for turn, running, and brake.
These 3-in-1 Razor Eyes would be perfect.

http://www.kuryakyn.com/Products/4124/Razor-Eyes

If i mount to the fender, I can use the license plate frame I have from Z and mount the signals to it as well.
I'd like to mount the plate low, if I do I dont know how I will mount the 3-in-1's because I really like having saddle bags so I could mount to the side rails.

then again, I can ditch the saddle bags, mount the plate to the axle and mount the signals like Erle did...but I really like having bags. Maybe I can integrate lights & the plate in to my bags?

Here is what I went with on a bobbed fender web page with holes drilled in the side for, I think better looking turn signals than shown on the web page. Unfortunately, your Z-Man plate holder won't interface. Have you perused Low Brow Custom or Old School Choppers for their tail light selections? I know what you mean, I gotta have my bags too, all my stuff just won't fit in my pockets.

I took a better look, at them, hell yeah, mounted on the end of your fender and lighted bolts to illuminate your Z Man plate and you should be tight, but good to go with your bags. Not a bad price for Kury anything either. Pricey product line, but great quality. Do a mock up and you'll decide, yay or nay.

nice job, in Edmonton we have to have our plate on the back of the fender no side mounts etc allowed, so i need the brake and the plate and the signals, i was thinkking about putting the signals through the side of the fender but i am stil trying to find a decent plate tail light/brake light mount for the bobbed fender. Anyone know of a directplay i would be interested in that.

i think I will go with the 3-in-1 razor eyes as they eliminate the need for a brake light.

I have a nice chunk of AL that I can mill in to a braket to hold the Z-plate and lighted frame along with the Razor Eyes.
I can mount the bracket directly to the fender by drilling one hole, or I can make it attach to the screw for the luggage rack/pillon, it's just be a little long but not very visible.

update...

I have 3 chain guards. dont ask. I looks like the chain guard will be the perfect donor to fab a bracket that will attach to the bolt used for the pillon/luggage rack.

I cut it out of cardboard and it seems to work. I'll get it Fabbed on Wednesday. I need a rubber stopper to keep it from banging against the fenders paint, and some sidewalk bolts to mount the Z-plate.

It's gonna be sweet, and no new holes in the fender so it can evolve.

Diggin' your fender cut. Just a quick question unrelated to this topic thread. The progressive shocks on your bike. The way they're dressed up on the top and bottom. Did they come that way or is that an added shock assessor? If so where can I get a set?

EPIC FAIL
So the crummy license plate bracket I made failed in epic proportions. Its a 60mile ride home from work and somewhere along the way this happened...

I knew I smelled buring plastic, it was the license plate lock box and all my documents.

This is the new mount to hold the license plate bracket. Aluminumn sheet, cut and bent by hand. Hammered edges, high polished and then beadblasted with a Triumph Logo...It secures to the both seat bolts. Replacement lights should show up today...I'll get a new plate next week when I get back to FLA!

Wow! You're lucky it didn't get dragged up under the guard by the rear wheel. That could've been nasty. Nice solution on version 2. Looks good.
