Stayed overnight in a hotel, here in Boston.
And, sure enough, these bloodthirsty creatures from hell, hitched a ride home with me! Two days later, we've got bites. Called, and got an exterminator to come to the house. These delightful house guests are a cool $1,900 to exterminate (got three different quotes)
PLUS, I had to toss the mattress and boxspring.

CHECK YOUR HOTEL BEDS
Pull back the sheets
Check the rolled edges of the mattress and boxspring.

The hotel was not the least bit helpful.
Used 30,000 Marriott points so my family and I could be food

Holy crap. Planning a trip to Boston in like June...hopefully this epidemic is under control by then. Not sure if it's true but I've heard it's much worse in Europe. Brother-in-law returned from a civilian deployment in Iraq and picked up the little buggers on a commercial flight. My place of employment has imported resources from all over the globe to staff a major IT project. There was an outbreak on a floor in one of the buildings that necessitated a lockdown until the problem was eradicated.

Go to TripAdvisor. If you have't already, register. It just takes a minute. Look up the Marriott and post a review. It will end up costing them WAY more than $1900.

Millions of people read TripAdvisor. It might even affect their room rate structure.

Dude.. that sucks!
My worst fear so to have a bedbug encounter.
I travel so much for work that its the first thing I do... pull those covers back and see whats hiding at the end of the bed.

Even though I don't use the dresser I still pull those drawers out too just to see if there are any bugs hiding in there too.

Ah man that sucks.... i travel a fair bit as well, i have been lucky i guess and never think to look, now i bloody hell will. And i would get that hotel to comp back your points or the cash etc, i would not let that go.... def put something on their site or others as noted above...i would make it a mission.

Normally I wouldn't suggest this, but seeing as how they were not helpful at all, and it put you and your family out so much. If you have or could get hard evidence that they are/were the source of the bugs. I'd take this one to a lawyer and sue the crap outta them!

Nasty critters, fortunately I have no first-hand experience. Here's a pdf link, as bedbugs caught some press In Montana last year.

It is my understanding that DE, Diatomaceous earth, works well at killing Bed Bugs as well as other insects. It's perfectly safe to humans and animals as many organic growers use it to protect their crops against bugs.

I used it a few years back when I got ate up by chiggers. Covered my hotel bed and rental vehicle with it and after a bleach bath of my own I didnt have any more problems. (i got the chiggers in the field not in the hotel, but I was nice enough to bring em back with me)

If you were on a business trip for your employer as part of your job, you should expense the extermination costs to them ESPECIALLY if they made the reservations on your behalf at that hotel.

That's good to know. John.

(...so, would this also apply for the mini-bar tab and the hooker???)

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Btw, I'm supposing my previous question here wouldn't apply to the Secret Service anymore, right?

What do I look for?

Sorry for your trouble - that's brutal. surely for 1900+mattresses it's worth going after them. As someone said, facebook is worth a go and I'm told twitter is a good complaint tool too.

Yep, I travel a lot and that is the absolute first thing I do when I check into a hotel. First, I place my bag on the suitcase rack (not on the bed), then I pull back the sheets and check the seams for wee, unwanted bugs and tells. Even highly rated hotels have been infested, so there is no guarantee unless you check for yourself. Here is a "tell" image pulled from the internet:

+1 on the Diatomaceous earth, and it kills them by carrying it back to where they live and itching them to death.
