In addition to my normal summer fun, I'm planning on doing a trip around Lake Superior. I'm looking at taking 6 days which should give me plenty of time to relax and enjoy the sights. So far, my initial itinerary is as follows:

Day 1: Home (East central Wisconsin) to Copper Harbor, Mi, Day 2: Copper Harbor, Mi to Duluth, Mn.
Day 3: Duluth, Mn to Thunder Bay, Ont.
Day 4: Thunder Bay, Ont to Wawa, Ont.
Day 5: Wawa, Ont. to Escanaba, Mi.
Day 6: Escanaba, Mi to home.

If anyone has done the north shore of the lake (Eddy????) I am open to any suggestions regarding lodging, food, moose avoidance procedures and gas stops. I'm guessing gas stations will be scarce from Thunder Bay to Sault St. Marie.

This is a trip I have been looking forward to doing for quite a while.

Barry, let me know the dates, if they fall on my days off I will ride part or all with you. It is the most awesome ride you can do in the Midwest. 2007 some site folks including Mert, Airguy, Wojo, Loco and I tied up on the ride. still remains a high point ride. I had planed it for this year with Stacka but it didn't happened. So it is on my agenda for this year (2013)Let me know if you are flexible on time. My days are less flexible as I work every other week and and getting time off is near impossible but if planned out and it falls on my days off I can get a five day stretch.

That would be an incredible trip! I don't think I'll be able to get the time off for it though.

Maybe if I skip the Midwest rally....

Barry, you can easily make Schriber, Ontario from Duluth in 6.5 hours of easy riding and breaks. Loco and I left at 0900 and got there at 1530. The folks from out East left The Souix the saem morning (around 10 I think) and we met in Schriber very close to same time. On the way back we took a wonderfully long time coming back from Schriber and made Lutsen, MN by evening. I am talking a number of long stops to enjoy good company and walking around at a number of places and eating dinner and lunch.

I have made that trip several times, it is an awesome ride.
I have a couple of suggestions (since you asked). there are lots of scenic turn outs between Duluth and the Canadian border at Grand Portage, all worth checking out. Also if you have the time a ride up the gun flint trail out of Gran Marais is good.
Thunder Bay, watch out for the drunk Indians on the streets (I know that sounds messed up and it is) it is a real problem.
Wawa, cool little town. Dont ride at night or in the fog. The moose like to be on the road.
the gas station situation is not too bad.
Escanaba, the Herford and Hops, great beer and food, easy to find.

Agreed, what makes a trip is taking time, smell the roses. That is what made my 2007 trip with the site guys so memorable. We stopped often and time was not a concern and it made it incredible. On our way back the reason we took longer than on the way up, we stopped and talked along the way and enjoyed the time with each other. Can't say enough about that.

I planned on making lots of stops along the way. I think I'm looking forward to the Duluth - Grand Portage stretch the most. I used to fly along the shore there a lot with my last job and always thought that would be a cool road to ride.

Eddy, I'll be on vacation from July 21st thru Aug 1st and was thinking of doing the ride starting right away on the 21st.

Barry, I used to think the trip from Duluth to the boarder was awesome, until...even though there are some less spectacular segments from Grand Portage to Thunderbay and for about an hour out of Thunder Bay...it get's more incredible as you go.

Looks like it will be possible for me to tie up with you on the Duluth leg up into Canada some but will have to return for work, unless I can get a night shift off. But we will certainly do some riding together! That is if you want some company.

The Barrel Inn in Schriber is a cool funky mom and pop place to stay.

I've gotta stop reading about these rides being planned for the summer over there. It's making me feel like I'd give my right nut for the privilege to ride just one of them, let alone this Lake Superior Jolly. A ride btw me and Eddy even talked about but the moons just didn't align for us this time.

But then there's "the river run" or the SW crowd's "Sedona to Grand Canyon" run, and I haven't even looked at any of the other rides yet.

So stop it, or I'll you'll make me have to come over there again and ride with yuz

found this picture from a past lake superior ride. Stayed in a cabin in Wawa, Ontario and the Wawa Motor Inn. The cabin we were in was were Alan Rickman lived while filming some movie (cant recall which) amd writing his memoirs.
very cool place, reasonable cost.
and yes that is a cuban cigar.
