Well it's Christmas and we getting about a foot of snow dumped on us and trying to keep a positive outlook so I decided to take this up... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCRVbdf4C-wI picked up two pinstriping brushes, a cool practice board that can be erased with some rubbing alcohol and some basic black and gold one shot paint. I am trying the Kafka technique as the board and the grid products are some pretty cool, functional and well thought out products. Who knows where this ends up but I am really enjoying it!

He makes it look so easy...
That grid is a good idea. I used to watch my Dad stripe - old skool. A skill I never mastered.

I'm just taking baby steps and trying to get good/solid and consistant straight lines down. I am finding it incredibly relaxing and fun to do though and I agree...Kafka makes it look incredibly easy!

"Just let the brush do the work." I don't know crap about what that really means, but it's what my Dad used to constantly tell me... before we reached a mutual agreement that I wouldn't be following in his footsteps and/or taking over the family business. Good luck and enjoy it.

Hmmmm, well, my winter hobby for twenty years was woodworking in my small kitchen, then in my pretty nice workshop. My goal was to make something nice for every one in my family. But after starting my first house 13 years ago, most of the winter time is spent working on the inside of my house. Last year, I started working on my new house, and it takes most of my spare time. (My wife and I like the Victorian style, with it's attendent multicolors and complex woodwork trim.) I also killed my Shopsmith last year, my son now owns my "shop" up the road, so I haven't done much fine woodworking lately. But I still like it, and if my ship ever comes in, I would like to build a new shop on the side of the house.

It's snowing like a mohambie here right now. We got at least a foot so far and supposed to keep up all night. Got some nice locust logs in the woodstove and making plans for a winter Brew-a-thon. Some stout and a nice IPA to get me through to the springtime in July.
A word to the wise is not necessary. It is the stupid ones who need the advice.

Surfing (whenever it gets above 15C, I don't like the cold anymore), riding, playing music, building things out of wood (so far, I did some simple furniture, surfboards and body boards).
And above all else, trying something new!

Now this is PRECISELY why we need hobbies. See what can happen if we don't release frustrations through a positive and productive channel.
( I hope you reported the incident to the proper authorities )

Actually, I guess it was a suicide. It spun it's guts out in a pile of pieces. (Some kind of springy clutch mechanism)I looked at replacing whatever sub-component it was, but honestly, there were so many small pieces, I couldn't recognize it even in the poor parts diagram that was on the Shopsmith site. And along that line... I heard a few weeks ago that they went under. I already knew that they were in trouble, chapter 13 or some such. But their web site is still up. Anybody know for sure? I hope not, cause I really like mine, and I have just about every attachment they make. Gotta find that "clutch" part thingy to make it go again, though.

Well, I sho' do hate Shopsmith's gwine outta binnis, but ya see, it's just a symptom of those dang TV devotees we was talkin' about in that other thread not woodworkin' as a hobby. ( Or doin' ANYTHING productive or recreational aside from mindlessly paying obesience to that dang flatscreen* ) * it's not the "tube" anymore P.S. I sure just LOVE to use the ASTERISK

I see shop smiths for sale on Craigslist all the time. Maybe you can find a new base for it? I also do a lot of woodworking! Maybe this winter I'll do some bike maintenence too, but I want to build my sister a high chair, she's expecting in April. I made my parents a knife block... The wood is from a Mulbery tree my god parents had cut down a few years ago. I also made a bunch of penny bottle openers. They have a magnet in them that catches the cap and lets them stick to the fridge I'll include one more picture of the knife block mid-way thru cause my bike's in the back ground

i usually work on watches, fixing or building custom pieces to sell. Then of course there is bike mods, and 2 weeks ago I picked up a lathe with a milling head, so I'll be doing more watch work, and hopefully I'll turn out some cool bike gizmos.

Pulled the 302 and C4 from my 73 F100. It's in the garage in various stages of disrepair. Gaskets here, paint there, replace this, rebuild that. I'm praying for a sunny day to roll the engine back outside and paint the block, only need a couple hours. If I can get that lucky I can start the reassemble stage and have it ready to go back into the truck at the first crack of spring. Yes I realize it's still December

Would be hilarious if that order was filled and the penny drilled was that one that is floating around out there worth over 1 million dollars. There is one that was spent by accident worth that from what I am told.(Could be wrong, there is a first for everything ) EDIT: I looked it up and turns out it is an urban myth. There are some valuable 1943 pennies but no where near that.

You do good work Benny. I'd like to see the highchair when it's done. Maybe you could slip a Triumph logo on it w/o you sister noticing too much.

I recently came into some of these pennies (50 or so) from the 40's in great condition. I was hoping to hit the jackpot. Not so much ! I think the highest value was a couple of dollars. Dangit man, can't a working guy catch a break

Well Ian, maybe you've just given me a Wintertime hobby. I've been collecting wheat pennies since 1971 (when I won one in a penny-ante poker game). I've got two 5 gallon buckets of them in the garage and about half of a 2 gallon Black Label beer bottle full.
This is Florida though, so it's a short Winter.

There are some valuable wheat pennies but not worth millions as was the rumor I had heard. Nothing that will make you rich.

I have collected coins from the 22+ countries I have been in the last 19 years and that would be one hell of a bottle opener collection. Let me Benny if you would like some business because I would love to have something like that
